News and notes from around the interweb:
- One of Sacramento’s seediest hotels, where the Unabomber used to live, is being converted into a Hyatt Centric (HT: Joe Brancatelli)
- Why Hooters Air failed It might have had something to do with hubbing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. And they were paying both flight attendants and Hooters Girls to fly.
- Project wants your hotel room photos to fight sex trafficking, building a database of hotel room photos they can match those to rooms that appear in ads for women being trafficked. (HT: Michelle L.)
- oneworld member SriLankan may get partially privatized with the process starting in the next few months.
- Qantas tickets purchased through Tuesday local time can earn double elite status credits.
- CEO of Aer Lingus stepping down, to be replaced by British Airways executive
- Alaska Airlines management layoffs costs are up, revenue down as they struggle to integrate Virgin America (which they overpaid for).
The hotel room picture project is a great idea whose time has gone. Backpage is gone and the adult section of Craigslist is gone, so the whole reason for this project is reduced by about 99.9%, at least in the U.S.
The only real reason for the picture database now is as an excuse to fundraise.
The hotel room picture project was a questionable idea from the start since it basically would end up enabling a law enforcement fishing expedition that dragged in a huge volume of innocent people into potential criminal suspect categorization for at least a limited while.
There is zero evidence that the elimination of Backpage and Craigslist’s so-called adult sections has killed off even 90% of illegal human sex trafficking in the US.
Art, click the link and read. It’s not that long and you should be able to comprehend it.
Re: TrafficCam for hotel rooms. This might be of concern for your privacy: “In addition, we also collect the GPS coordinate of the device that you used to collect those photographs. We use the GPS coordinate of your device to verify that your photographs were actually taken at the correct hotel.” So it tells anyone who has access to the site that you are not home.
Just noticed your Instagram pics on the right. Did the Customs lady catch you stealing a baby?
