Southwest Flight Attendant Shoved Elderly Wheelchair Passenger Into Her Seat For Landing [Roundup]

fNews and notes from around the interweb:

  • Mean. The old Southwest would never.

  • Since this is entirely about the airline’s operational convenience, forget ConnectionSaver, we need CarryonBagSaver.

  • And this was never really an issue before with Southwest – free checked bags meant passengers didn’t all try to carry their belongings onboard to avoid fees. Now there’s not enough bin space and a whole lot of confiscating passenger bags. Sad!

  • Much better than what passengers seem to usually get when American puts them up for the night, to be honest – no complaints about filth. I’m impressed!

  • Why is everything at airports so expensive?

  • American Airlines spends $32 million on boarding pay in first five months of flight attendant contract

  1. she is still standing after FA has time to reach her and after her companion didn’t help her to sit down? More to the story here I think

  2. “Hey @united why do your gate guys ALWAYS lie about no overhead bin space and forcing us to check our bags when there’s plenty?????”

This has been discussed and debunked before.

Gate agents at every airline have very limited time and are under tremendous pressure to close out the flight on time. It’s impossible for them to predict which passengers use the overhead bins with bags that could have fit under the seat, and vice-versa, as they board.

At United gate agents text back and forth with the flight attendants about remaining overhead space (“We can take 6 more bags”) but you still have passengers in the jetway, past the gate agents, bit not in sight of the flight attendants – how many? How many have roller boards?

Some of the unused overhead space seen is also in 1st class – saved for those passengers when some do board towards the end. I’ve seen flight attendants at many airlines only allow 1st class passengers to use 1st class bins. That part of the plane has fewer people, so the bins have fewer bags and often some open space.

Most of the time they get it right. But sometimes they will cut it off a little early because it’s FAR better for the flight to go on time and everyone to make their connections, than to get 2-3 people stuck at the back of the plane, large bag in hand, who have to wait until the end to get their bag up to the front again to gate check it. When that happens, the flight almost always departs late. And we’d see the tweet, “Thanks, United, for making me miss my connection…”

  3. Yes, because if she had been standing when the plane hit the ground it would have been a far better outcome. (Snark here). There’s a reason flight attendants are instructed to get everyone seated for landing.

  4. @George Nathan Romey — We need more ‘snark,’ sir! Time to excessively claim damages for assault, battery, attempted murder… and, of course, demand everyone be fired everywhere always!

  5. I actually LOVE the fact that Southwest now begs for those who fly to gate check their bags because of a lack of overhead space – it allows me to not have to pay for my second piece of luggage – as it used to be before SouthWorst was bought out and ruined by the bean counters now in charge.

  6. Terrible thing what the Southwest Flight Attendant did. Southwest has really lowered the bar in who they hire

  7. In contrast, Afte a long afternoon and evening of delays and cancellations, and rebookings ( 2
for us) because of widespread thunderstorms, Delta cancelled our last chance to leave same-day. vouchers around 10PM , 5 minutes after the cancellation was announced I received an email with options to select several decent local hotels. round-trip rideshare vouchers. and $48 more food credits for the morning. They all worked smoothly. I thought this was a great response by Delta considering weather was the root cause. (Our plane did leave the gate but had to return when we were 2 1/2 hrs late to debark 2 unaccompined minors. Maybe this factored into Delta’s decision to compensate.)

  8. Any person, any age, standing during a planes descent is a threat to all passengers. I’d have gladly helped that FA get that idiot strapped in!
