Delta is running a sale on domestic economy and extra legroom coach awards for bookings made by September 30. One-way prices start at 5000 miles.
The award sale may have been out for a couple of weeks, though I didn’t notice it mentioned until this post from No Mas Coach (since rules allow for travel beginning August 23). 21 day advance purchase is require and travel much be completed by April 7.
Here are sample cities and one-way prices for the domestic award sale:

The big joke, of course, is that Delta pretends not to have an award chart (they do have one — they price awards based on their chart — they just hide it from members). If there were no ‘regular prices’ they couldn’t have a sale.
Here’s an availability calendar for Seattle – Los Angeles:
Discounted awards are for flights pricing super-cheap in cash. For instance I’m seeing 5000 point awards on $73 (all-in) tickets, even with this discount your’re getting less than 1.5 cents per mile. Stick that in the back of your head — 1.46 cents per miles is considered special with SkyMiles.
All travel at discounted prices is blacked out: November 22 – 28, 2016; December 20, 2016 – January 3, 2017; February 16 – February 20, 2017; March 16 – April 3, 2017
Here are route-specific blackouts:
- Between Austin, TX (AUS) and Los Angeles, CA (LAX) March 9 – 15, 2017
- Between Las Vegas, NV (LAS) and Seattle, WA (SEA) December 16, 2016 – January 6, 2017
- Between Los Angeles, CA (LAX) and Portland, OR (PDX) December 15 – 19, 2016
- Between Los Angeles, CA (LAX) and Seattle, WA (SEA) December 15 – 9, 2016
- Between Los Angeles, CA (LAX) and Salt Lake City, UT (SLC) March 9 – 13, 2017
My family and I paid 5,500 SMF-LAX for travel in October. Might be worth checking other cities not on that list.
I booked a few of these over the past couple of months at 5500 miles sonI guess they’re always having a sale.
I booked two at reduced prices, YYZ-LAS & PHX-LAS, former at 9500, latter at 5500. The cash price was cheap, but specifically with PHX-LAS, the $72 was an infamous E fare. Normal medallion benefits eligible fare was about $20 higher, so I was happy with the CPM as a Platinum medallion on an award I still have a shot at an upgrade, not that it matters much for 2x 1 hour flights. My tie breaking rational was that m also sitting on 400k+ SkyMiles, so I better start using them rather than waiting for the “perfect” redemption.
Also got Edmonton to Orlando for 9500 points for a $200+ ticket (and a lot of flying), about 10 days ago, so not entirely domestic.
Just flew China Eastern CTU-DLU FOR 6k and $7.51. FYI that’s Chengdu to Dali China. We are in the middle of a 25 day journey around China…………
Complain all you want about relative value…I’ve found a bunch of value and have booked 14 round trips for family travel. Hard to argue when saving thousands on unglamorous coach travel around the western US…
