American Airlines Free Wi-Fi Is Showing Up Early On Some Flights — Expect Service To Get Worse, Not Better [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • Some American Airlines flights are already getting free wifi in advance of January’s change. The move to match Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and soon United and Alaska is wise – but happens not to be good for me.

I prefer the high priced wifi that reserves bandwidth for those who are paying versus the increased usage that comes with free. Delta flights with a similar system noticeably underperform American’s today, so I expect a degradation in performance once free hits. Free only really pairs with top performance on Starlink. United and Alaska don’t have the broad roll-out yet.. but when they do, they’ll be tops in among U.S. airlines for wifi.

  • This is broken down by race and occupation, but I think we need a crosstab.

  • This is just unacceptable in business class.

  1. Here we go again with false prophet JonNYC…

Gary is so self-interested that he’d rather no one get free WiFi so that his paid WiFi is slightly better…‘thot’ leader.

As to the ‘body count’ announcement, maybe keep that to yourself.

  2. I’ve noticed more flights where the wifi isn’t working. Once it’s free it and everyone is trying to stream I doubt it’s going to be very good. I can’t imagine AA spending much money on it. The wifi in the clubs was awful for about four years before AA upgraded that.
