Buy American Miles at 2.3 Cents Apiece and Get Free Internet Security Software

You can get 44 American AAdvantage miles per dollar spent at McAfee.com on several products. That’s like buying miles at 2.3 cents apiece, which is less than American usually sells them for but not a price at which I would be a buyer (need to push under 2 cents per mile for sure to get me there, and of course shopping portal miles do not post instantly or within 48 hours). While hardly an expert in this space, I’m not a huge fan of McAfee internet security products, though they’re certainly better than being unprotected and I’d choose theirs over Norton. I view this as buying miles and getting security software free. My guess is there isn’t a great resale market for these items, so don’t expect to recoup your cost that way. (HT: The…

The Westin Seattle and How to Frustrate Me When Ordering Room Service #FirstWorldProblems

I used to stay at the Westin Seattle fairly frequently, but hadn’t been there in nearly three years until a one-night stay a few weeks ago. It’s still pretty much as I remember, of course. Rounded, two towers, some decent views. I prefer the location of the Sheraton usually, and also the W, within the Starwood space. And I love the breakfast at Hyatt Olive 8. So I don’t make it back often at to the Westin. Still, it works just fine. It’s an escalator ride upstairs to the large lobby. I’ll never forget Wandering Aramean opening about half a dozen bottles of wine in the lobby after the bar closed. Years ago there used to be a Roy’s restaurant off the lobby, but that’s long gone. I have no beef with the rooms, they’re…

When Will Your Checked Bags Get Lost, and What Can You Do About It?

When readers shared their own travel tips and several really stood out as worth highlighting. Jordan said, Always expect the unexpected when traveling. If you are checking a bag, make sure you pack extra clothes and other neccesary items into a carry-on in case/when things dont go as planned. Checked bags will get lost. Not every time, of course, just when you’re the one checking them and when you need their contents the most. Transferring bags between airlines. It’s an extra complication and condition that needs to go right. Short connections, whether because of flight delays or not Disgruntled employees. When Alaska had a baggage handler job action I had one bag mutilated to shreds and another sent to Reno rather than Seattle. Airlines are better at tracking bags than they used to be, but…

750 Avios Points for Taking One Survey

I signed up for e-Rewards more than a decade ago, and I had the option to sign up directly with them rather than through an offer from a single loyalty program. When you sign up after being invited by a program, your options to transfer points earned from surveys were limited (if you signed up with one hotel chain you wouldn’t have the option to transfer to other hotel chains). Fortunately I’ve had the ability to transfer to whomever I wish, but I also didn’t get a signup bonus from a specific program’s invitation either. When I first started the surveys were more lucrative — more points for shorter surveys. I’ve stopped using e-Rewards, mostly. I’ve kept the minimum to transfer to miles in my account just to be ready for a program like the…

Bits ‘n Pieces for October 15, 2013

News and notes from around the interweb: Which Hotel Loyalty Program is Best and Why? My piece over at Conde’ Nast Traveler. Younger business travelers are more likely to splurge with their company’s money than they would with their own. Older workers are much less likely to do so. (HT: uggboy on Milepoint) Several months ago I put together a primer on American Express financial reviews. Dan’s Deals what sorts of activities he sees as flags for banks generally to cause them to take a closer look at your accounts. Wandering Aramean says that United is now allowing only three connections (four flights) on one-way awards between the US and Australia/New Zealand and no longer just between the US and Asia via Europe. A United website glitch was letting people book award tickets without miles…

30% Bonus on Transfers from American Express to Virgin Atlantic

The U.S. American Express Membership Rewards program is offering a 30% bonus on transfers to Virgin Atlantic through November 30. One of the popular uses for Virgin miles in the past was converting to Hilton at one-to-two, 50,000 Virgin miles would yield 100,000 Hilton points. But since the March 28th Hilton devaluation that doesn’t appeal nearly as much. A 100,000 point HHonors balance to me is now just two nights at the Embassy Suites Portland instead of the Conrad Koh Samui. Still, it’s better even normally to transfer American Express points to Virgin to Hilton than it is to transfer straight to Hilton. This bonus makes it better still. Just like British Airways, award travel entails paying fuel surcharge on itineraries where a paid ticket would also — although they’ve reduced fuel surcharges on economy…

20% Bonus on Transfers from American Express to British Airways

The U.S. American Express Membership Rewards program is offering a 20% bonus on transfers to British Airways through the end of the year. To understand the opportunities and limitations of the British Airways program, see Unlocking the Value of British Airways Points. In the past, American Express offered offered a 50% transfer bonus and a 40% transfer bonus. They’ve also done 35% (this year, even!) and 30%. So this is hardly one of the best deals they’ve offered. Nonetheless, transfer bonuses this year have been relatively sparse compared to recent years. And having a transfer bonus is a whole lot better than not having a transfer bonus. But this bonus doesn’t seem like a once in a lifetime opportunity that will get me to proactively transfer points to British Airways without a specific use for…

Kogiya is Northern Virginia’s Best Korean Barbecue

Kogiya is without a doubt the very best Korean barbecue restaurant in Northern Virginia, an area with many Korean options. (HT: TCEDG) I went at 4pm on a Sunday, and only a couple of tables were taken. By 5pm every table was occupied, and minutes later a line formed. This place has gotten popular, and it’s too good and too small. Go early, or (I imagine) go very late. They’re open 10:30am to 2:00am. Supposedly you can call ahead for seating, and they’ll also call you when it’s your turn to be seated. The restaurant is in suburban Annandale. It’s in a place where rents are low, you can get good value and experiment in offering things that wouldn’t work in downtown DC. The interior is stainless steel industrial. Rent is low, service is friendly…
