Hurricane Maria is dumping three feet of water on Puerto Rico. It’s taken out much of the power on the island. San Juan International is closed today, hopefully re-opening tomorrow but we’ll learn more soon. That seems optimistic. Other airports are closed too.
Via Points Fitness here’s video of San Juan airport during the hurricane.
He also shares video he describes as United staff assessing the damage to San Juan’s terminal B.
Massive water filtration through the roof has caused essentially terminals B1-B11 to be covered in water aside from broken glass windows.
It’s going to be a long way to recovery for the island. Nothing like this has ever happened, and not just power, but communications in general are terrible.
Hopefully Ricardo, the blogger at Points Fitness, is able to reach the members of his family on the island that he hasn’t yet been in contact with.
@ Gary — I feel so sad for the people of Puerto Rico. It has just been one thing after the other for so many years. Things can’t get much worse. I have been there countless times, and seeing this makes me cry.
I heard from two local news sources that the airport will likely reopen tomorrow, but not necessarily for commercial flights.
Is underground electric an option for P.R? Something to consider during the rebuild. How is the U.S. (FEMA) going to pay for Hurricanes Harvey AND Irma AND Maria this year? SIgnificant expense and bailouts required. I suspect most Americans are unaware of the duration of these costs.
Thanks Gary. As of last night everyone in the family has been accounted or.
