Hilton HHonors has the best mid-tier hotel status, in my opinion, a mix of easy to get (they give it away for the price of a credit card signup) and rich benefits (it includes breakfast).
Here’s an offer for free Hilton Gold status with signup. Hilton is offering bonus points and an accelerated path towards keeping the status as well.

From January 1 through April 30 Hilton offered double points with no properties excluded. Hilton co-brand American Express cardholders got an additional bonus of 1000 HHonors points when paying for their first stay with the card during the promotion period.
For May 1 through August 31 they’re again offering double points, this time called “Unlimited Bonus” — Registration required.
Last year American Express announced that Platinum (and Centurion) cardholders would get unlimited Boingo internet hot spot access. This year the benefit was expanded to Starwood co-brand credit card holders. The retail price of this benefit would exceed $700 per year.
The benefit is going to be really useful for me, because Boingo will be providing true high speed internet to members at 7 major US airports.
It’s the end of 2015 so remaining hotel promotions are ending, and the new year is upon us. We now know what three of the major hotel chains have in store for the January through April timeframe.
And I’m especially interested to see what Hyatt is going to do once they have a new CRM in place in the coming days.
Hilton has made details of their much-anticipated lifetime Diamond status available. The requirements are: 10 years of Diamond status (does not have to be consecutive) 1000 paid nights Diamond status is normally achieved for a single year through any one of: 30 stays in a calendar year 60 nights in a calendar year 120,000 HHonors Base Points in a calendar year $40,000 spend in a year on either the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve Card or the American Express Hilton Surpass Card While you can meet the 10 years’ requirement with spend alone on the premium co-brand credit cards, doing so doesn’t help you meet the 1000 paid night requirement. Interestingly there’s no lifetime Gold offering. Starwood offers lifetime Gold with 250 nights and 5 years of status, and lifetime Platinum with 500 nights and 10…

Yesterday American Express came out with a 35% bonus on transfers to Virgin Atlantic. But Virgin Atlantic has the worst miles and hits you with fuel surcharges. Today they came out with a 50% bonus on transfers to Starwood Preferred Guest. Starwood points are awesome, but you’re still only getting 1 Starwood point for every 2 Amex Membership Rewards points. There’s the occasional person that’ll find some value in this offer. But most should hold onto their Amex points. There’s now also a 33% bonus on transfers to Hilton through November 30. Oddly, I don’t see the bonus when using Google Chrome. But it does come up for me using Internet Explorer. American Express Membership Rewards is running a 35% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic through November 30. They ran a 30% bonus back in May, and a 30% bonus exactly a year ago. They’ve done 35% before as well. One of the popular uses for Virgin miles in the past was converting to Hilton at one-to-two, 50,000 Virgin miles would yield 100,000 Hilton points. But the ratio has been devalued to 1-to-1.5. And Hilton devalued. Still, Virgin miles are fairly easy to acquire. Points transfer also transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards. I’m not a fan of Virgin Atlantic miles, although I have a ton. I’ve never redeeemed the points. I wanted to on their partners Singapore Airlines and on Virgin America, but both times I wanted one-way awards and Virgin Atlantic only offers roundtrips with both.…
