AMAZING FARES That Won’t Last from $178 Roundtrip to Abu Dhabi; India, Asia and Africa Deals Too!

The Flight Deal is an awesome resource. Head over to their post on this for all the details. I’ve just confirmed as of this writing that the deal is still working. You won’t find it using the ITA Matrix, but search Kayak or Google Flights, purchase on sites like Priceline. (Orbitz may show a higher fare initially, but if you’ve found the lower fare on Google Flights it should show a price drop when you click through to the itinerary.) Booking through US Online Travel Agencies should give you 24 hours to cancel. Etihad has some holiday specials for you folks in New York / Dallas / Chicago / Washington D.C. / Los Angeles / San Francisco to the Middle East, India and Africa. We did some primarily checks for the following: Johannesburg [JNB] –…

How to Book Deeply Discounted Awards Flying Around Asia

A couple of years ago I wrote about flying for as little as 5000 points. That’s the Japan Airlines Mileage Bank promotional discount for travel on their partner Bangkok Airways. I wrote about the offer shortly after it was launched. And then it was extended for all of 2014. Now Rapid Travel Chai points out that it has been extended through March 2016. Here’s the discounted award chart:

A Surprising New Way To Use Your Credit Card Points for Business Class Awards to Asia With Great Availability

Philippine Airlines flies non-stop from North America to Southeast Asia. You don’t hear about them often because they do not have any US frequent flyer partners, and no bank program transfers points to the Mabuhay Miles program. And yet therein lies an opportunity. Just like Chase transfers to Korean Air open up a world of availability to Asia because there’s very little competition for first class awards on Korean from US members, if you can get access to miles that can be redeemed on Philippine Airlines you’ve got a whole world of availability at your fingertips. Citibank points transfer to Etihad Guest and Eithad’s miles can be used on Philippine Airlines. ANA Mileage Club has a new partnership with Philippine Airlines. American Express Membership Rewards points and Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints transfer to ANA. Here…

Why Not Combine Easy Lufthansa First Class Awards With First Class Awards on Asiana and Thai?

Last night I shared a rare find, that Lufthansa first class award space for 2 passengers at a time is available far in advance even when booking using miles from one of their partner airline programs like United, Singapore, Aeroplan, or ANA. Between mid-January and the end of March more flights between Denver and Frankfurt have this space than do not. That’s a great opportunity, but maybe you like I don’t have a need to book a Europe trip presently. Consider extending this trip and just routing to Asia via the Atlantic. That means you can combine Lufthansa first class award space with first class on Asian airlines, try out first class on some combination of Thai Airways, Asiana, and Air China — not just Lufthansa.

Cathay Pacific About to Rebrand, Focus on Its Core Asian-ness By Becoming an Online Travel Agency

The American Airlines rebranding was incredibly expensive. And while it’s true that the new composite aircraft they’ve ordered need painting rather than brushed metal, painting all the aircraft anew – not to mention changing all the signage, even making new napkins and updating websites, was a huge undertaking. I’d suspect it didn’t help them on net to sell a single additional ticket, or a ticket they would have otherwise sold but at a higher price. Now Cathay Pacific is about to reveal a brand refresh. Here’s the concept: “‘Travelling well’ will be a core part of the brand refresh” reveals Dane Cheng, Cathay Pacific’s Director of Sales & Marketing. “We see Cathay Pacific as global brand which is not just about the airline but about the lifestyle, about travelling well and travelling in style and…

American Expanding Asia Flying With Dallas – Beijing Announced for Next Year

American announced that it plans to begin Dallas – Beijing service next year, talking advantage of allowable frequencies between the US and China that aren’t currently being used. Beijing flying adds to the Hong Kong and Shanghai service from Dallas that began in June, and to the Seoul and Tokyo Narita service that’s already been in place. American is adding a more substantial Asia presence than before, a presence US Airways never had at all. The press release doesn’t mention a start date for the service, but does note that the route will be operated by a Boeing 777-200… which will mean their new business class product but no first class. What’s important here, I think, is that it’s a new Asia route announced by new management. Pre-merger American went forward with Dallas – Shanghai…

Award Space Wide Open: Take Your Whole Family to Asia in Business or First!

Star Alliance member Air China often has very good premium cabin award space from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Houston to Beiing. Air China rarely ever has much premium cabin award space from New York (or Washington Dulles) to Beijing. That’s changed, and award space on their flights — with a new, very good product — is so good that it has to be a mistake and cannot last. Starting in December you can find award space in a premium cabin almost every day. There are plenty of dates where first class is wide open — not just two seats but four or six. And there are even a handful of dates where eight business class seats are available. Air China has two daily flights. Here’s a day where I was searching for four seats:…

Up to 100,000 Bonus Miles for American Flights to Asia

American is offering a bunch of bonus miles to goose their new Dallas – Hong Kong and Dallas – Shanghai flights as well as Chicago – Shanghai. Headline offers “up to 100,000 miles” are fun. But what it means is you can earn the bonus four times, for four roundtrips. You’d have to travel in paid premium classes in order to earn 25,000 points per trip though. Nonetheless, I like that even discount coach fares earn bonuses. Which means that anyone flying a paid ticket should be in a position to earn, and there’s no downside to registering. The offer is valid for travel between June 24 and December 6 — but only for tickets purchased June 24 onward, a restriction I do not like at all. They don’t want to spend extra money marketing…
