How Many People Signed Up for Airline Credit Cards This Year? And 100 Years of Flying the Mail
A roundup of the most important stories of the day. I keep you up to date on the most interesting writings I find on other sites – the latest news and tips.
If You Got a Year-End Email From American Airlines I Hope You Didn’t Share It to Social Media
Yesterday American Airlines sent end of year review emails. I wrote about how few miles I earned from flying 100,000 miles and how scarce complimentary upgrades have become for someone like me. The airline encouraged members to share their activity via social media, embedding links to do so.
Members who took them up on this also posted their frequent flyer number and e-mail address. Oops. American is now telling members they need to delete those posts and monitor their accounts in case all their miles are stolen.
This Man Says He’ll Never Fly American Airlines Again. Of Course He Will!
Ken Wimberly, who describes himself as Chief Visionary Officer for a commercial real estate firm in the Dallas area, says he’ll never fly American Airlines again.
He usually flies Southwest. He wanted first class tickets for his family of five, so he bought them from American. Then he needed to change the travel date for one member of the family.
American Airlines Sent Me a Year in Review and It Has Me Questioning the Value of Loyalty
American Airlines just sent me a ‘year in review’ and it tells me everything I need to know about the value of Executive Platinum status. I’ve just requalified with a flight where I sat in the last row of coach, and it’s time to ponder the value I get out of my elite relationship going forward.
Non-stop New Zealand From Just $420 Roundtrip on American Airlines
A handful of dates in February and plenty of dates in March – still peak season – have the American Airlines non-stop flights between Los Angeles and Auckland, New Zealand pricing from $420 roundtrip.
This is an excellent opportunity to visit New Zealand at a bargain fare provided you’re amenable to making the journey in economy.
American’s New Airbus A321neo Will Load Into Their Schedule Tonight – And Cram In 15 More Seats
American Airlines has 100 A321 ‘neo’ or ‘new engine option’ planes on order (22 of these deliveries have been deferred). Back in August we learned that American would take delivery of its first neo in January. It would be a new ‘dense’ configuration with more seats than the airline has ever put into an A321 before. And that it would become the template for going back and adding seats to existing Airbus A321s as well.
This new Airbus A321neo aircraft is going to be loaded into American’s schedule overnight tonight and the first flights will be bookable starting Sunday.
American Announces Several New Domestic and International Routes From 7 Hubs, Some Surprising
Yesterday United Airlines made a big announcement of new flying from San Francisco. Today American Airlines is out with their own announcement of new flying as well.
American is expected to grow at both Dallas Fort-Worth (in 2019 with new gates coming online) and Charlotte (in 2020 with new gates coming online) and at Washington National (by operating larger regional jets at the dreaded gate 35X is replaced with a new regional concourse). The airline says these are their most profitable hubs.
American Airlines Elite Status Clearance Sale
American Airlines will let you buy back your status if you aren’t going to requalify. On the one hand it’s expensive. On the other if you were going to mileage run to reach the status level, this saves you time.
American may realize their prices are too high, or at least that they have plenty of time to market to members in different ways. If a member doesn’t buy, why not put elite status on a clearance sale?
Alaska is Surveying Lounge Customers: Should They Partner With American, Delta, or United?
What’s Alaska’s path forward? It’s interesting to see their survey about what their customers want in airport lounge partnerships.
The airline is having customers compare features and membership price points for combining an Alaska Lounge membership with access to United Clubs, American Airlines Admirals Clubs, and Delta SkyClubs as well as with an unnamed partner lounge network.
