Great Changes with the Hilton American Express

Mar 07 2005

On Friday I mentioned a signup bonus of 15,000 points for the free Hilton American Express. Looks like from a discussion at Flyertalk that the card has some new improved benefits. Historically the card come with Silver elite status and has offered 3 Hilton points per dollar spent, plus an additional two points per dollar spent at Hilton hotels. Effective April 15th, there will be three new benefits: An additional two Hilton points per dollar spent (for a total of five) at supermarkets, gas stations, drug stores that are not departments of superstores or warehouse clubs, the post office, restaurants, and for cell phone bills. Five Hilton points per dollar spent is an excellent return for a free card. Gold VIP status for a year if you spend $20,000 or more on the card in…

Free Hilton American Express with 15,000 Miles for First Use

Mar 04 2005

Also via Free Frequent Flyer Miles, as always the Hilton American Express has no fee. Now there’s an offer of 15,000 bonus miles with first use. As I’ve explained before, American Express is pretty good at figuring out who they’ve given signup bonuses to in the past. If you previously signed up for a Hilton Amex with a 10,000 mile offer you’ll probably get only 5,000 more points this time — that is, you’ll get the difference between what’s on offer now and what you’ve gotten in the past. In my experience, Bank One (actually now JP Morgan Chase) and Citibank are pretty good for giving multiple signup bonuses…

American Express is offering a $10 gift card for viewing their expense management report demo. It’s geared towards corporate cardmembers, but isn’t anywhere that they ask for a card number to verify eligibility.

Use Amex Points on OneWorld Carriers

Jan 05 2005

One of the great frustrations of the American Express Membership Rewards program is that American Airlines does not participate as a transfer partner. What’s more, it’s nearly* impossible to use American Express points to claim an award seat on any oneWorld carrier (American, British, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, LanChile, Finnair, Aer Lingus). I say nearly because there are ways of working partnerships to get some seats, such as transferring points to Continental or USAirways to claim award seats on Qantas. But there aren’t any oneWorld partners in the Membership Rewards program. Right now there’s a brief window of opportunity, however, created by a confluence of two separate conversion bonuses. As I noted yesterday, transfers from American Express to Starwood earn a 50% bonus through March 31. And until January 31, transfers from hotel program into…

Free the First Year American Express Platinum

Jan 01 2005

Now that banks are able to issue American Express cards, some interesting offers may be coming down the pike. The first one that I’ve noticed is from MBNA, which is offering the American Express Platinum card free the first year and $195 after that. The card comes with MBNA Worldpoints as its rewards program rather than Membership Rewards. As far as proprietary rewards programs go, this one is pretty good but I still don’t like it as much as the various airline and hotel programs. So I wouldn’t put much spending on the card. Instead, I’d use the card for its benefits like airline lounge access. Amex Platinum cards come with access to Delta, Continental, and Northwest lounges when flying on the respective airline. The Platinum card is usually more expensive than straight lounge access,…

Bonus miles for filing taxes

American Express OnlineTax is offering 1000 Delta miles for using their online tax filing service from January 1 to April 15. $34.95 buys filing of your federal and state returns, which is somewhat higher than other online services I’ve seen and likely higher than the after-rebate price of some software packages.
