United’s cheapest business class fares are turning out to be more punitive than first advertised: beyond losing Polaris lounge access, seat selection, and no changes, many travelers will also earn no redeemable miles and get no flight credit toward status.
United has finally done what it spent the past year signaling: the cheapest Polaris and premium economy fares now come with coach-style restrictions, including paid seat selection, no changes, and — in basic business — no Polaris lounge access. This is being sold as new “fare families,” but the real story is simpler: United is making its cheapest premium tickets worse, not meaningfully cheaper.
Delta says it is introducing a new “Basic Business” fare that strips out things that used to come standard in the premium cabin. What’s widely misunderstood is that this isn’t a new cheaper business class price point. It’s new restrictions on the lowest business fares so Delta can sell last minute seats to price-sensitive travelers without offering the same deal to customers who would have paid more money. Passengers buying the least expensive business class tickets will have an inferior experience compared to what they get today.
Chief Commerical Officer Andrew Nocella said they’re going to segment premium like they’ve done coach and that this is what customers want.
On last week’s Delta Air Lines earnings call, executives “drum[med] up excitement for premium product announcements in November.” That’s when the airline is holding its Investor Day, and they’ve already told us what to expect: ‘basic business class,’ doing to the premium cabin what they’ve already done to coach.
Emirates started selling ‘basic business class’ fares last year. Qatar Airways came out with this, restricting access to lounges and to advance seat selection on the cheapest business class tickets. And the latest entrant into this game is Finnair, and their restrictions are absolutely brutal.
What’s really interesting here is whether airlines can make Basic Business Class work as a way to generate more revenue. While Basic Economy has caught on and had mixed results, it’s going to be a lot harder to do with Business Class and that strategy will probably cost an airline more than it’ll generate in incremental revenue.
