Mere days after we learn that refused to rent a car to a Puerto Rican and called the cops who threatened to have the customer deported, because he wasn’t carrying a passport inside the United States comes a story that Spirit Airlines is just as challenged which probably comes as little surprise. Americans working for travel companies aren’t very good at geography or American history, it seems?
The attire on this Spirit Airlines flight attendant haunts me. I can’t stop watching it, and I can’t look away. She parades down the aisle dressed in concert, while another crewmember makes an announcement about it. She’s apparently promoting her Philadelphia-based cleaning services business that she runs on the side.
Spirit Airlines offers less legroom than other airlines. While Southwest might give you 32 inches of pitch (the distance from seat back to seat back), American Airlines, Delta and United usually offer just 30 inches. Spirit? 28.
So if you want to be comfortable on a Spirit flight, you’re going to need an aisle seat – and to make full use of stretching into the aisle. And once you’re planning to to that, why not kick your feet up and enjoy… with your very own portable ottoman?

This is a fabulous reminder for me to stay grounded. I’ve flown most of the world’s great international first class products, and I tend to see business class as ‘transportation’. But most people fly coach, and most never see a forward cabin. When they do, it’s like a dream. That could even be Hilton Silver status from a credit card, it doesn’t matter. There’s a fee for the match, but if you’re going to travel on Spirit only once it could be worthwhile. Spirit Airlines, the low cost and fee-based carrier, is offering the opportunity to fly them without paying most of their fees for a year.. They’re offering 12 months of status to almost anyone with status of any kind either with another airline or even a hotel chain. That could even be Hilton Silver status from a credit card. And the offer is about to be pulled.
Expecting a woman to confront a tall man, when she’s pinned between him and the wall of an aircraft, without the assistance of cabin crew seems a bit rich. But not as rich as doubling down on the invasion of her personal space by looking over her shoulder at her phone screen. And somehow she’s being unreasonable for seeking comfort from a friend that she’s stuck next to him?
Spirit Airlines is an “ultra low cost carrier” with fees line extra charges for checking in (at the airport) and for bags (that you carry on yourself) often costing more than the fare itself. They’re the butt of late night comedy routines, but they also make air travel far more affordable – not just for those who fly them, but on routes and at times when legacy airlines have to compete with them.
So it’s weird that they offer a product that’s like domestic first class that you’ll find on American, Delta, United and Alaska Airlines. Except it’s not exactly like it. Spirit calls theirs “the Big Front Seat.”
want to see Spirit Airlines continue as a standalone company. I think that is better for airfares and for diversity in business models. I also don’t think buying Spirit is a good idea for JetBlue. They are operationally challenged to begin with and the complexity of a merger and integration won’t make air travel better. JetBlue is massively overpaying.
As a result I’ve maintained that the JetBlue deal to acquire Spirit is bad for customers and bad for shareholders. However bad business decisions are not in themselves, illegal.
