United Airlines flight 2477, a Boeing 737 Max 8, encountered an issue after landing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston on Friday. Following its arrival from Memphis International Airport, the aircraft deviated from its intended path during the transition from the runway to the taxiway around 8 a.m. local time. The plane exited the paved surface and entered the grassy area beside the runway.

All seems pretty normal, right? Well, two things are notable about this flight:
United Airlines has real claim to being the U.S. global carrier. They’re already the only U.S. airline flying to the Philippines – having launched Manila service – and now will fly to Cebu there as well (via Tokyo). They’ll add service to Morocco – direct to Marrakesh – and to Medellin, Colombia. Fifth freedom flying from Japan and love for their Houston hub make these adds even more interesting.
Last Spring United Airlines introduced wings with crew names and pronouns. These replaced separate nametags and crew wings. And the flight attendants union filed a grievance – not against the option to display pronouns, but because they say this jeopardized flight attendant safety.
This took place on a flight from Washington Dulles to Munich this week on board a Boeing 767-400, which has 34 business class seats and just two lavatories in that cabin. Business class passengers were limited to using a single lavatory during the flight, as one of the bathrooms was locked by the pilot during the flight while a line of passengers were waiting to use it.
United Airlines, like all other U.S. airlines, suspended service after the October 7th Hamas attacks on Israel. In fact, most of the world’s airlines stopped flying to Israel while El Al continued service with little interruption.
Now United has announced its plan to return.
The least that an airline can do is clean the cabin and check that the seats are working before boarding the plane.
