Trump Supporters Confronted Senator Lindsey Graham At Washington National Airport Today

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, serially defenestrated by Donald Trump for the past four years, is viewed as insufficiently supportive of the President by Trump’s supporters – at least by those who came to DC this week and stormed the Capitol.

The President’s supporters found Lindsey Graham flying American Airlines at Washington’s National airport’s C pier and confronted him as a “liar” and a “traitor” for breaking with Trump’s disputing of the election outcome this week.

After Graham was confronted by a vlogger who reported being live on YouTube, a security detail escorted the Senator away from the gate area. At the end of the video you can hear someone call Lindsey Graham a ‘pedophile’, something that underpins much of the villainy of QAnon conspiracy.

American Airlines stopped serving alcohol on DC flights for Thursday to curtail potential unrest but cocktails are back today. I’m wondering what sort of video will come out from today’s flights.

When I wrote about House Democrats wanting to add people involved in Wednesday’s unpleasantness to government No Fly lists, I referred to protestors for a reason – though there were some bad people and some very crazy people at the Capitol, and though there’s absolutely no excuse for scaling the wall of the Capitol, trying to disrupt the vote count, and the rest of the destruction and mayhem that followed.

What I wanted to do was draw a distinction between people who committed these crimes and those who showed up to protest, and didn’t do those things. I thought the protests themselves were baseless but wanted to draw a distinction also between people we might colloquially call terrorists and people who have actually been charged with a crime.

The people who stormed the Capitol were threatening the rule of law. The people inside counting the votes were defending it. Our system of elections is meant to facilitate the peaceful transition of power and the people who opposed that violently should be charged (and many of them were, and more each day – around 60 on Wednesday and then social media has crowdsourced scores of tips for law enforcement).

Our response to Wednesday’s events must follow the rule of law, and must also protect people legitimately exercising their rights even – and especially – when they seem misguided. At least that’s the position I tried to make clear in my post, that I’ll defend innocent until proven guilty and oppose ex post facto addition of punishment (like No Fly List) to crimes.

But I also have no compunction at all about calling out horrible behavior. You’ve just seen even more of it here.

  1. I fully agree that the No Fly List is an egregious system. What I question is whether, as long as we are under this system, if it is worse to inflict it on more people — as adding these people would do — or to inequitably and overwhelmingly apply it against certain sections (not to beat about the bush, I am referring of course to people profiled as Arab/Muslim).

Applying the system evenly would potentially force some bipartisan pressure onto Congress to change it. Though of course many Democrats have ignored the ACLU’s complaints about the no fly list so perhaps this is wishful thinking.

  2. That is a good point. “Defenestrated” means to throw out a window, which Donald Trump has never done to Graham. He has emasculated him metaphorically for being weak.

I really don’t know what is wrong with this. BLM riots were allowed to go on for months, causing billions in damage and yet when the people decide to show their objections to the fake election by protesting the corrupt vote count it’s “threatening the rule of law?”

What kind of orwellian doublethink is that?

  3. @LarryInNYC for what it’s worth I wasn’t being literal in my use of the term, I don’t believe Trump *literally* shoved Graham out of a window, but it’s exactly what I had in mind to describe the relationship

  4. @Joe Care to provide actual evidence of this “fake election” you speak of, or are you all bluster and no facts like the rest of your brethren?

  5. Poor Gary. One of the best things about Trump was his knack for breaking the Left and revealing them for the petty, tantrum-throwing children they really are. Trump broke Gary’s blog. It used to be pretty much a travel-related blog, didn’t it? lol. TDS isn’t pretty.

  6. I do not share the same views of Lindsay Graham and have never been supportive of him as a Senator. His speech in the Senate was nothing other than cowardice, jumping off the Trump bandwagon to re-write his own history. You can’t play both sides of the aisle when it becomes convenient. Graham’s four years of playing Trump’s little lap dog has consequences.
I don’t condone the actions of anyone harassing anyone-be it from the left or the right. It is quite ironic, however, to see the consequences of his actions. This is what happens when you pander lies and conspiracy theories only to forward your personal interests, rather than for the greater good.

    1. It is not ok to harass anyone.
    2. People, wear your masks.
    3. Science = truth
    4. Trump doesn’t care about anyone other than hiimself. Not even the right wing fascists who he sent into the Capitol without their leader although promising to be marching with them side by side. People wake up. Open your horizons

  7. @Marc who in the goddamn hell cares whether or not you share the same views of Lindsay Graham?

  8. @Marc, if science is truth, why does it change every now and then? Today we read headlines that red wine is good for you. Tomorrow we read that it’s bad for you. The day after we read it is actually good for you again. Is truth as elusive as your small wenis?

  9. Hey jonathan, it’s hilarious how you mindlessly regurgitate the left wing media’s outright lies of there being “no evidence” for election fraud/theft. Scores of people are on the record who claim to have witnessed said fraud. The fact that the democrats and the media refuse to investigate any of this evidence doesn’t equate to “no evidence”. It just equates to one side doesn’t want to investigate the claims because they know very well what everyone would see if they did. If dems had nothing to hide, they’d act like Trump when he was baselessly accused of Russian collusion: allow an investigation to take place and give them 4 years to investigate all they want. Now THAT’S how an innocent person would handle this. Which is exactly why the last thing dems would allow is an actual investigation on any of this. lol. Nope, no willful partisan hypocrisy/blindness going on anywhere around here. lol

  10. @Gary I am on the same page you are. Horrible behavior is horrible. No matter the political viewpoint. And, were I you, I would not take comments on this type of post. As there are already horrible responses. I am sad to see fellow travel folks in this light, but not surprised.

  11. Why give these people any more exposure, they lost AGAIN! Now crawl back into the forest and hide in the dark waiting for your next “leader” to rile you up.

BTW, why are they flying? Did the tires on their homes go flat?

  12. hey Brady. So no one thought it was a good idea bringing these scores of people to court as witnesses to the fraud?

Saying you saw “fraud”, doesn’t make it such.

A signed affidavit is virtually meaningless. Testifying in court is completely different.

  13. @joe

you really don’t see the difference between looting Foot Locker than looting the US Capitol?

  14. tRump must be impeached immediately and thus disqualified from ever holding office again. We must stop the cretins from running the country into the ground! Prosecute all of these mongoloids!

  15. So Gary – given that these folks were clearly creating a significant disturbance, which would likely have continued of Lindsay G was on the flight, do you think the airline should have allowed them to board their flight that day?

  16. Defenestrated? You should learn the meaning of big words before you use them.
Reminds me of the news reporter who used the word canoodle inappropriately on air because he didn’t understand the meaning.
Stick to smaller words that are appropriate and you can understand better.

  17. Congressional Republicans are making the same “election fraud” arguments that some of these commenting trolls are.

There is ONLY any talk of so-called “election fraud” due to the temporary argument of the WH consistently talking it up, convincing his brainwashed lemming followers it’s a thing, and then getting idiots like Ted Cruz to claim “39% of people doubt the election results”.

These are the true dregs of society. Glad Josh Hawley just had his future political ambitions shattered the last few days. He still got off easy.

  18. Watching videos like this, I’m actually glad I’m stuck at home and unable to go anywhere via plane…

  19. Gary, I suggest you delete the posts that have nothing to do with flying and/or travel.

Harrassing another person at the airport or on the airplane is not okay, period.

  20. @Gary: I don’t think defenestration is apt in its figurative sense of “disposing of” either. Trump kept Graham close, dancing on a string, like a puppet or a pet.

  21. It’s like Lord of The Flies, except instead of children it’s the political right viciously turning on each other.

  22. I’m actually surprised that the airport police did not step in to act, especially in light of the past few days. Can they? It SEEMS the MWAA would be authorized to have them arrested and removed from the terminal for harassing passengers and posing a security threat. I wonder how BLM protestors would have been handled under these same circumstances. Oh, wait, that’s right….they were not harassing politicians at the airports and on planes.

Thugs, lunatics, white trash, idiots….deplorables. Period.

  23. I’m no fan of Graham but the actions toward him here are beyond the pale. Despicable. I hope those these Trump cultists were not allowed to fly.,

  24. This blog is going straight to hell.
Many of us enjoy travel to escape the issues of the world.
    This is becoming CNN-lite.

  25. Finally abandoning one’s own cult to stand up — late as it was — for principle contrary to the cult’s beliefs comes with the risk of becoming hyper-unpopular with the former fellow travelers in the cult.

Lindsey Graham did the right thing only after having already secured his job for 6 more years, after the Senate majority was lost to his party, but not until after the storming of the US Capitol building by seditious thugs had taken place under the banner of his former Lord Trump.

Better to go down standing up for something good than standing up for something bad. Graham should be proud that he finally has the banner waivers of Lord Trump as his haters. Carry those jeers from Lord Trump supporters at DCA as a badge of honor.

  26. The airline denying transport to passengers actively harassing other passengers is justified. Did the airlines deny transport to any of the people at DCA that were harassing Lindsey Graham?

  27. “The people who stormed the Capitol were threatening the rule of law”? They were doing more than just that. The people who stormed the Capitol violated the law.

Who threatens the rule of law? All the Trump supporters who are still protesting the election results even when there is no presented, indisputable evidence of fraud on a scale large enough to change the outcome of the election results.

  28. Terrorists. These people tried to overturn a lawful election via violence. Its time to stop treating Trumpers as a joke and treat them as what they are. A threat to democracy. They frickin killed a capitol hill cop and got praised by the president.

  29. I believe the legal word for “showed up…and didn’t do those things” is “accessory”. If you just show up at a party with someone who decides to do a murder, you can be ruled an accessory to murder.
If while engaging in a dangerous felony, someone dies it’s felony murder. Arson and robbery were definitely part of the Jan 6 party, so we’ll have to see how many die – and how many can be considered accomplices to those deaths.

  30. Those harassing trolls should have been escorted off the airport property. They could then enjoy their time on the bus.

  31. @jason perfectly showcases why he can’t think
Firstly science is constantly learning. As more things are learnt, situations may change.
As to the example he’s given, that’s the example of journalism tailored for the lowest common denominator. Sadly that is still a bar too high for @jason

  32. To the folks who believe in fraud, let me ask you this? If the D’s were engaging in fraud how did the R’s do so well downballot?

  33. Arlington Traveler,

When it came to the down-ballot races, maybe Trump’s deranged “the Democrats stole the election” supporters can find imaginary succor with real Biden-voters showing Trump-level competency in “stealing the election”.
