United Hired a Private Eye To Spy On Injured Flight Attendant—Then Fired Him [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • A United flight attendant who took sick leave after reporting a spinal injury incurred on a long haul flight wound up fired after the airline hired a private investgator to spy on him.

The PI collected evidence that he was working at a cousin’s restaurant during his sick leave, in violation of company policy, though he disputes it and is suing to get his job back and back pay.

  • Base CLEAR price will go up $10 to $209 and Amex credit will follow suit.

  • British easyJet passengers turn 2.5 hour flight into a nightclub.

@easyJet #easyjet #turismoinglés #turismoibiza #animales #viajes #londonlife #londresibiza #londontiktok #ibizalondres #inseguridadavion #turismodecalidad ♬ sonido original – kiri

  • Why Canada hosts more old passenger jets than any other country — by far The Boeing 737-200 “was designed to be fitted with a gravel kit” and “”All but seven of Canada’s 117 “remote northern airports” are unpaved” because “permafrost can melt in the summer, creating cracks or large ripples in [a paved] runway.”

That [737-200] modification includes a deflector on the nose wheel that shields the underbelly from flying rock fragments. It also blows compressed air in front of each engine to prevent debris from entering the turbofans, which could be damaged and shut down.

  • 15% off purchase of GHA Discovery Dollars May 29 – June 19. (HT: Loyalty Lobby) Here’s whether it’s worth it, provided you stay at GHA properties:

    • Only some hotels let you apply Discovery Dollars to prepaid rates. They’ve begun rolling out the ability to apply reward dollars during the booking process. For hotels where you can only apply on-property, you wouldn’t be able to use these to cover a prepaid rate (which can be cheaper).

    • If you’re not spending on food, beverage, spa, etc. at those places then this deal doesn’t make as much sense sense. In that case you might give up 10% savings on the prepaid rate and 7% rebate on cash spending in order to buy Discovery Dollars at a 15% discount.

    • But if you don’t book prepaid rates, or the hotel you want to book lets you apply Discover Dollars to the reservation while booking, this is a nice discount.

  • Woman set up a discount travel agency using stolen credit cards when the travel she was buying for clients cost her zero, she could sell everything super cheap and still have a great margin!

  1. I assume they have video of him working at the restaurant. Hopefully W2s as well (and not just getting paid under the table).

  2. My friend worked as a PI in the 1990s. One of his big clients was an insurance company that paid out disability claims. They wanted proof that a person was really injured. TL;dr this has been going on for years.

  3. I was out on disability for two months from my first job in California due to a broken arm. The rules were clear: no working. I had paid disability insurance coverage to the state so I got a portion of my wages as compensation. The reduction made it hard to get by. It was pretty miserable. The first month I had a lot of medical appointments but the second month was just letting the healing process complete. After that, the cast was cut off and the pins were taken out while on sodium pentothal (needle injections) for pain relief. I can understand this person’s financial situation but the rules are the rules on working. We will see if the lawsuit is successful.

  4. I worked for a workers comp insurance company that hired investigators. The best catch was someone receiving benefits for an injured back caught on video winning a Demming, NM rodeo event.
