‘You’re F—ing Incompetent’: Rep. Nancy Mace’s Charleston Airport Meltdown After Officers Miss Her Curbside Escort

Early Thursday morning, Representative Nancy Mace (R‑SC), who is currently running for governor, arrived at the Charleston airport. There was an escort detail assigned to her and instructed to meet her at approximately 6:30 a.m. at the curb in a white BMW.

Surveillance video and communications cited in the report show that instead a silver/gray BMW arrived around 6:51 a.m. at the curb. The officers did not initially see the white car they’d been told to expect. And because of the confusion, officers did not meet Mace curbside. She went straight for Known Crewmember security entrance.

When officers located her, the incident report states that Mace “immediately began loudly cursing and making derogatory comments to us and about the department,” including telling the officers “we were ‘f—ing incompetent’ and ‘this is no way to treat a f—ing U.S. Representative.’”

As she was escorted from the checkpoint to Gate B‑8, the report says she continued a profanity‑laden tirade. One officer logged: “The entire walk to gate B‑8 she was cursing and complaining and often doing the same into her phone.” She also said “we would never treat Tim Scott like this.” (This is my favorite comment: police would never mistreat the black guy!)

An American Airlines gat agent told the officers he was “in disbelief regarding her behavior” and that a U.S. Representative should not be acting the way she was.

Here’s the incident report:

Mace’s office responded saying that she needs extra security because of what happened to Charlie Kirk. Mace herself posted video of her airport arrival in a silver BMW to twitter.

Her office says they had communicated the silver vehicle details to the escort team – so the failure was on them – as though that justified her profanity-laden tirade. And Mace says that all federally elected officials use Known Crewmember lanes at security. That is not accurate.

TSA’s Known Crewmember and its successor Crewmember Access Point provide expedited screening for eligible airline crewmembers (pilots & flight attendants). Eligibility hinges on being a current airline crewmember verified in participating airline databases, not on being an elected official.

When a Member of Congress bypasses regular lines, that’s via an escort arrangement (e.g. airport police, TSA coordination), not because they’re covered included in Crewmember Access. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) wanted members of Congress who have received threats to receive security escorts of the sort Mace received in Charleston included in last year’s FAA Reauthorization but he could not get it done.

It’s sort of odd in that:

  • The security checkpoint is literally supposed to be secure. Everyone is scanned and checked for weapons.
  • There are more law enforcement agencies on-site at major airports than anywhere else – local police, TSA, Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, Drug Enforcement Agency, FBI – to name just a few.
  • And there are surveillance cameras everywhere.
  • So surely this is that last place extra, dedicated security details and escorts are needed for a minor member of Congress even if they’ve received threats. Virtually anywhere else they’d go would put them in greater jeopardy!

One officer wrote in their report “Any other person in the airport acting and talking the way she did, our department would have been dispatched and we would have addressed the behavior.” I get definite Sheila Jackson Lee vibes.

  1. She’s not wrong (about others occasional, frustrating ‘incompetence’), but this is yet another example of misbehavior while traveling, like Gary frequently posts about.

If she weren’t a U.S. Representative, she’d probably have been thrown outta there, fast. That ‘perk’ is better than most airline statuses anyway. The ole ‘not getting arrested for causing a scene because I’m in Congress’ benefit. Move over 360-Global-Keys…

  2. The Republicans act like kings and queens rather than public servants. They have no respect for those who work for a living. They are their serfs who must at their beckon call at all times.

  3. @ Gary — Seems someone is qualified for high office — a narcissistic psychopath. Did they check her for Adderall and other, um, things?

  4. Whatever the standard procedures might be, a profanity laden tirade appears to be a demonstration of a distinct lack of self control & an inability to cope with unexpected events. Akin to Joffrey’s behavior vs Tywinn’s behavior at the council where the result of the “red wedding” is presented.

I would hope to see leaders, when presented with unexpected or non-standard events, to respond with much more subtlety & self-control. Berating (correcting?) underlings might have some merit in certain circumstances but it can be done with much more class than this would seem to demonstrate.

  5. @Gene — This ain’t mere ADHD. Naw, just like *those guys* in the 1930s/40s, I’m pretty sure they’re on ‘meth’… Dear Leader shaking at His Olympics…

  6. Has nothing to do with her political affiliation. This is just an entitled politician who thinks they can treat anyone they want any way they want. People aren’t getting paid, aren’t getting good and she acts like this.

Tells you everything you need to know about her.

  7. The worst part is the use of the hackneyed phrases “thank you for your attention to this matter” and “asking for a friend”, sure signs of a low IQ. Throw in the phrase “maybe check your facts next time” and it’s clear she gets her rhetorical cues from Internet trolls.

  8. @Tom It goes both ways, it has nothing to do with political affiliation. I’ve seen Democrats pull the “Do you know who I am!” line at airports.

  9. @Tom It is not a Republican thing, it goes both ways. I have personally seen Democrats use the “Do you know who I am” line at the airport.

  10. I recall a time when Republicans used to care about their public image. And they used to be cordial to anyone who disagreed with them. An outburst like this would have been scandalous and followed up with a sincere apology. Now that Republicans have evolved into the hateful monsters they have become, they have no issues with lashing out in public because they really just don’t give a f* about what they say or do.

  11. “The Republicans act like kings and queens rather than public servants.” We have ample evidence this is common amongst modern politicians. Nice try in your attempt to paint one party as demons. The simple fact is the vast majority of those seeking office are self-centered jerks.

  12. Yes. She is an awful person, but it really reflects our society as well. We read about it here regularly and I see it myself weekly. Maybe we work on taking a deep breath and stop treating our American brethren with disrespect.
