5000 Free American Express Membership Rewards Points

Last week I outlined an American Express offer of 5000 Membership Rewards points for signing up for their pay over time option. (You don’t actually have to use pay over time, I don’t and I wouldn’t, but adding the feature to your card for free will earn Amex points.)

At the time the website seemed not to be working, some folks had success calling up and adding the bonus to their accounts but others were met with frustration.

The website, however, now seems to be working.

  1. Web site is working. Prompts you to sign into your account and gives the following message:

    Extended Payment Option
None of your enrolled cards are eligible for extending payment

  2. It worked for me with the Gold Premium Rewards card, but there was no representation about points earned.

  3. Wait — I got that wrong. There’s a footnote that says I get a “maxiumum of 5000” membership rewards per account.

  4. Thanks for the link.
This is what I got by clicking the link you referred and logging in:
“We’re sorry but we are unable to approve your request. If you have questions, please call the customer service phone number on the back of your Card.”

  5. This is a targeted offer – I logged in and it said “We’re sorry but we are unable to approve your request. If you have questions, please call the customer service phone number on the back of your Card.”

Which, funny enough, is what they told me the 6 times I SM’d them about this 🙂

  6. Did not work for me either.
“We’re sorry but we are unable to approve your request. If you have questions, please call the customer service phone number on the back of your Card.”

  7. Thanks Gary! Signed up my Plat & Prem Rewards cards & my wife’s Prem Rewards card too (and I’ll try to sign up her Plat card too when it arrives soon – she was approved for the 50k offer today!)

  8. I’m unclear as to whether this means all purchases over a certain amount (in my case $100) are switch to pay-over-time or if it requires manual intervention.

  9. Thanks for this. I did have to call to have it done, since the online enrollment didn’t work. Still only took a couple of minutes though.

  10. I was able to register my PRG card, but didn’t see any indication of the 5,000 bonus points besides on the first landing page. Fingers crossed!

  11. Hi Gary,

I tried enrolling online and was denied, called CSR and they said it was by “invite only”…and also that maybe in the future if I was good, I would get the invite.

I’m not holding my breath on this one.

P.s. – Thanks for all your tips on your blog! I will keep reading! =)

  12. I signed up my Gold Premier Card and my husband’s too, and it worked for both! Thank you!

They asked for income, I hope they don’t do a credit pull.

  13. Got the “None of your enrolled cards are eligible…” message when I tried to enroll my Gold Business card. But it seemed to work for my wife’s Amex Platinum card.

  14. This offer from AMEX, sadly, is a bait-and-switch much like their recent bonus code matching fiasco. Just spent 30 unproductive minutes on the phone with them — apparently this 5000 mile offer is bait-and-switch. Nice business model! Time to close all AMEX Gold Premier Rewards cards.

  16. yeah i signed up online and got approved for my personal PRG…i tried a couple of weeks ago thru email and said i couldn’t get the promo because it was targeted…

yeah the 5k offering isn’t very clear at all..how does Gary know that they will give you 5k? What if you earn a max of 5k on any interest paid for when you pay over time?

  17. Got the “your already enrolled” response, so I emailed them to have the bonus applied. Guess we’ll see what they say.

  18. I didn’t receive any emails for this offer, and I never seem to be targeted for anything. But my PRG personal card and my husband’s PRG personal worked in the online form. No changes to my account on day 1, but on day 2, 5,000 points had posted to both accounts. Thank you!

  19. 2 x 5,000 points posted overnight (see post # 9) to my account – nothing posted to wife’s account yet.

  20. I also got the “We’re sorry but we are unable to approve your request. If you have questions, please call the customer service phone number on the back of your Card.” message.

I called awhile back when this offer first came out and I was told that I didn’t have my card long enough to qualify for that payment option. You need to have your account over 1 yr to be able to have that as a payment option. This may be the answer to the denials for some.
Can anyone verify that you’ve had your card for 1 yr or more who was approved?
