News and notes from around the interweb:
- United is going into enforcement mode to make sure you don’t bring on oversized carry ons.
- Man gets banned from a Hilton hotel because of his trouser snake.
- There’s a new tool that will let you pay by credit card using your phone instead of the card itself. You have to carry a dongle in your pocket, though. (I swear this item is unrelated to the item above). HT: @aheeger
- Virgin America has purchased mile bonuses almost as often as US Airways. They’re back with a bonus of up to 60%. Here’s my analysis of the January 50% bonus offer. HT: James F.

(I swear this item is unrelated to the item above). LOL you are so entertaining!
“The Loop” seems superior and more versatile than the Coin business floating around social media. Not to mention cheaper!
The new tool to pay by credit card with your phone is not new. There are now a bunch of companies offering very similar services. I’m not knocking Loop, but it is having trouble standing out in the crowd.
Since Elevate is not a fixed system, why even bother mentioning this. This is a total ripoff. I just looked into it and 20k + 12k bonus cost over $1k. The value of the points is less than $700 and you don’t get any points for flying with points so you end up losing close to $500 on the deal. What am I missing?
@newbie – if you read the link to my previous discussion you can benefit by using elevate on partner airlines like virgin atlantic, singapore, and virgin australia — this is not worth it for travel on virgin america itself.
I’ve just can’t wait for waht United thinks up next. I’ve got a > 10 year old 22″ travel pro bag that I love – I’ve carried it on nearly every domestic carrier, Europe, Japan, etc. It’s done 500k miles. I am certain it’s about 1/2″ too big. F United for making me waste my money on a new bag.
Also, my laptop backpack fits under every seat and it’s too big in every dimension – wow. It’s like they expect a business traveler with a laptop to use the “large bag” for under the seat, and then check things in.
There is no way this is not revenue-based.
