I receive compensation for content and many links on this blog. Citibank is an advertising partner of this site, as is American Express, Chase, Barclays and Capital One. Any opinions expressed in this post are my own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by my advertising partners. I do not write about all credit cards that are available -- instead focusing on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same). Terms apply to the offers and benefits listed on this page.
American AAdvantage has two banks issuing credit cards to members in the U.S.: Citibank and Barclaycard. Citibank advertises online, through direct mail, and in American’s club lounges. Barclaycard advertises in the airport and on flights.
Citibank is running limited-time 60,000 mile signup bonuses for its personal and small business credit cards.
- Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ MasterCard® has an offer for a limited time to earn 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after making $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. (Offer expired)
There’s a $0 annual fee the first year, then $95. Cardmembers receive one free checked bag and preferred boarding on American Airlines flights.
You also get 10% of your miles back (up to 10,000 rebated per calendar year) when you redeem miles.
Barclaycard has also bumped the bonus on the Aviator Red card to 60,000 miles. And they’ve now finally opened up their business MasterCard for applications, too.
The small business card offers 40,000 American AAdvantage miles after first purchase and comes with a $95 annual fee. That’s less lucrative than the personal card or the current Citibank small business card (although no minimum spend is required for the bonus) but it’s another card you can add to your wallet.
It also comes with:
- Double miles on American spend plus office supply stores, telecommunications, and car rentals
- $99 companion certificate on your account anniversary provided you spend $30,000 on the card during the year
- 5% bonus on your total miles earned with the card for the year. So base earning is like 1.05 miles per dollar and bonus earning is 2.1 miles per dollar.
- First checked bag free, preferred boarding on domestic flights, and both apply to up to 4 companions on the same PNR
- 3000 elite qualifying dollars after $25,000 spend during a calendar year
Both Citibank and Barclaycard offer premium versions of their personal credit card. I have both. Barclaycard doesn’t let you apply directly for the Aviator Silver card, you have to get the Aviator Red and product change. A reader who has the Aviator Silver tells me it didn’t prevent him from being approved for an Aviator Red.
- Double miles on American spend plus office supply stores, telecommunications, and car rentals
Meh
Is the $3K EQD additive to the $6K EQD you can earn from the Silver card (for $9K total)?
No 10% rebate on miles redemption? I thought that used to be the case with Aviator card – am I wrong?
