1000 Free British Airways Avios Points

Via Head for Points, you can still sign up as a british midland Diamond Club member even though that program isn’t long for this world since the airline was acquired by British Airways.

Use ‘voucher code’ 1JA1KD when joining and the new account will start off with 1000 points.

Then you can log into a British Airwas Executive Club account and use the ‘Combine My Avios’ link to move the british midland points over to British Airways. That’s 1000 free BA points for anyone that doesn’t already have a british midland frequent flyer account.

This scales up a bit, too. Get everyone in your family signed up for a British Airways and british midland account if they don’t already have one. You can move their 1000 bmi points to BA, and then link their BA account to yours in a household account so you can spend their points… up to 7 accounts can be linked together.

  1. The sign-up bonus 1000 miles can not be transfered via the family account link-up. Any other miles can, but those will give you an error.

  2. Jaanus, I believe that’s why he said to use “Combine my Avios” to move the miles to BA for each member and only then to use them from the BA household account.

  3. Where is this “Combine my Avios” link located? I must be blind. I’m not seeing it.

  4. ok, BA thought I was under 18, fixed that, found the link, then tried to combine, it took the BMI miles and left them in limbo sent me an email, I had to call, give them all the info and now I’m on hold.

The things one does for “free” miles.

    -David

  5. and they are still in limbo, she sent a message to member services, I’m supposed to check again in 24 hours. lol.

  6. I actually just tried to transfer my remaining Diamond Club miles (no sign-up bonus miles) and got an error as well. Got deducted from DC but not added to Avios. E-Mail said to call them, but can’t be bothered right now to spend ages on hold.

  7. I received the 1,000 BMI miles, but also had a problem tranferring them to BA. BA sent me a follow-up email to tell me that the 1,000 BMI miles had been debited from my account, but not credited to my BA account…

  8. Worked for me. Only thing, if you have a household account, you possibly have children under 18 years old. They can’t sign up for Diamond Club (which I don’t understand) so it’s not really for all members of your household. Worth mentioning, I think.

  9. I just did this for myself and my wife. Took 5 minutes and 1,000 avios in each our BA accounts. Thanks for the heads up Gary!

  10. Kids can sign up for Diamond Club, Aarif, but only via Family Membership. And as I wrote in the original Head for Points piece, the application form for Family Membership members does not allow you to use a promo code.

  11. do those miles show up immediately when you sign up? I don’t see them in the account.

  12. How to transfer to BA:

1 Log in at http://www.ba.com, which takes you to the Exec Club home page
    2. Click on Manage My Account
    3. Click on Combine My Avios which should appear under My EVouchers under My Options

If Combine My Avios is not there, it is because you have no date of birth registered with BA.Amend your BA profile and Combine my Avios will appear

  13. I click to the “Combine My Avios” page, but after logging in and then clicking the red “Combine my Avios” link, I fail to see anything on the next page that enables a transfer. Am I missing something?

  14. Thanks for the heads up! Got 2000 for me and the hubby. When I signed him up it didn’t show his 1000 but I clicked “manage account” and there they were. Then transferred them to BA.

  15. thanks a lot!
The transition from BMI to BA went smoothly for my girlfriend and me…

I created the household account, but don’t see her points in there? Do I need to just wait? Or am I looking in the wrong spot?
    Thanks.

  16. @Jay-Your girlfriend has to accept your invitation. The link should be in her email account.

  17. @Gary

Is there any way to actually transfer (as opposed to just pooling) avios points from one shared account to another?

  18. Thanks for the tip, I’ve done 2 accounts, xferred 2000 points, woo hoo! I had 18K before

    Same issue as Jay though.
I’m head of HH account but don’t SEE the “household points” of 20K under my BA account
While my wife’s BA account shows personal 1000, and HH points 20K

  19. @lairdb, I don’t see points in any of the accounts I created either and have the same ???

  20. Thanks – just did this for me and my fiancée, we both got the 1,000 avios and had no trouble doing the combine points option to transfer them to BA. I had already opened a BA account in anticipation of using avios, but these are my first actual points in there!

  21. My BA account has the “Combine My Avios” options, but my parents’ accounts do not. Any ideas? Could it be because they’re only a few months old?

  22. @barelyelite You need to update your parents’ account to include their DOB in order to have that option. Combine or transferring points are only allowed for 18+ year olds.

  23. I tried to log out, log in again, no points. Tried to create another account using Chrome and IE, no points. 3 attempts, 3 fails.

  24. read somewhere your date of birth has to be same on both accounts, probably name spelled exactly same too, for it to work.

  25. @Raffles, Thanks for the heads up about this.

“If Combine My Avios is not there, it is because you have no date of birth registered with BA.Amend your BA profile and Combine my Avios will appear”

I did not have a DOB specified and it was not giving me the option to import my points.

  26. Fail. I just tried to transfer my 1,000 BMI points to Avios and got an error message/e-mail that the transfer didn’t go through. Ate my 1,000 BMI points though. D’oh!

  27. My email from BMI is missing the membership number. And their website seems buggy – i cannot find it anywhere after logging into my account, and going to the “my account” section actually logs me out. I tried transferring from Avios using my email as my membership number, but it doesn’t like that. Has anyone had similar problems? Thx…

  28. Signed up for the bmi account, using the voucher number. Was not given 1,000 miles or any miles for that matter. Bummer.

  29. make sure there’s no space at the end of the code when you paste it in. But the site seems to have bugged out and isn’t issuing a membership number.

  30. Signed up two accounts, within 10 minutes had 2,000 new points in our household account. Thank you again Gary!

  31. first try under my name – posted 1000 miles immediately.

second and other tries for family members – didnt get it!?

I think the site has bugged out….
