United Airlines is running a deep discount business class sale out of several Delta hub cities. You can fly United from the U.S. to Rio or São Paulo from $1102 roundtrip for business class. This fare certainly will not last. This deal was first spotted by Thrifty Traveler‘s premium airfare deal alert service.
These fares should be available for most of 2022 out of Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, and Seattle (though can range up to $1660 roundtrip for Seattle).
Key details of fare basis PNX6H9EN:
- Outbound travel permitted Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, return travel permitted Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday (other days slightly more expensive)
- 50 day advance purchase required
- You can fly into one city and back from another, but ‘double open jaws’ are not permitted. Two connections are permitted in each direction.
- Tickets are non-refundable but no change fees apply (however any voluntary changes would cause the itinerary to be repriced at then-current rates).
Mileage-earning on United will be revenue-based, while Air Canada Aeroplan will credit 150% of flown miles (so around 15,000 miles depending on itinerary).
United’s excellent Polaris lounges are re-opening, here are details on the Houston lounge which would be visited in the sample itinerary above. Interestingly this isn’t the first deep discount business class fare war to Brazil we’ve seen with Delta.

@Stephen – Why not? Sure, everyone has heard stories but it can’t be the dump you seem to imply. I’m sure the people are charming and the steakhouses have a good reputation and the booze is good. Lazy Traveler has good things to say about it, which counts for a lot.
I have a feeling that ORD-LAX on Delta A220-300s is on the horizon.

@Stephen If you don’t like Rio de Janeiro, you don’t like life. I rather doubt I could appreciate the company of any person who can’t appreciate Brazil generally, or Rio de Janeiro in particular. I’ve long been wont to say that Hong Kong and Rio vied for status of greatest city on Earth, but these days Rio has no real competition.

Rio is not an attractive city even though it’s setting is magical. The attraction of Rio is the sexy population and the wh-houses. You can travel to Rio many times and if you are not introduced you would really be left to wonder why people rave about a crime infested place with mostly bad food in a corrupt swamp carved out of a pristine jungle.
