“The Baby Is Coming!” Delta Flight From New York To San Francisco Diverts To Columbus As Passenger Goes Into Labor

Delta flight 668 from New York JFK to San Francisco diverted to Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, August 20, after a passenger reportedly went into labor during the flight. The aircraft continued to San Francisco the same afternoon after medical responders met the aircraft on the ground in Columbus.

The Boeing 757-200 pushed back seven minutes early from JFK terminal 4 around 6:53 a.m., and ultimately arrived in San Francisco about an hour and a half behind schedule at Noon. They were on the ground in Columbus for just that hour and a half.

Passengers relay,

I was on the flight. It was pretty nuts.

A woman helped her the whole time until paramedics took over. The crew got her full name and I believe tried to upgrade her, which she denied. (Flight was pretty full, believe all the first class seats were taken)

Paramedics met the aircraft in Columbus and the passenger was taken for care. While airlines often s “don’t allow” travel late in pregnancy, Delta does not forbid passengers from flying in their final weeks or pregnancy or require a doctor’s note.

Nearly one hundred babies have been born on planes since the dawn of commercial aviation. Worldwide, some airlines provide a lifetime of free travel to babies born onboard.

A woman gave birth on Jetstar Asia. She named the baby after the airline, and they gave her $1000 in baby supplies. Meanwhile a baby born on a Cebu Pacific flight was given 1 million frequent flyer miles. And a baby born was born on a Jazeera Airways flight — and was given 18 years of free flights.

Delta does not have this policy. And in this case labor occurred during the flight, but the baby was not delivered onboard.

At the end of Up In The Air, George Clooney may tell Sam Elliott, as the chief pilot of American Airlines, that he’s “from here” when he hits 10 million miles inflight. This baby’s birth certificate will reflect their actual place of birth.

  1. If you’re searching for a thoughtful, curated travel experience, consider a flight on Delta.

  2. She was lucky to fly Delta – United would have dragged her off the plane for sneaking an unauthorized passenger aboard.
