Her Pilot Boyfriend Freaked Her Out—After a Barking Noise Under the Wing, She Bolted for the Exit Door

A JetBlue passenger with a “pilot boyfriend” freaked out, believing that her plane was broken – and tried to open the emergency exit to get out. Her boyfriend told her the noise she was hearing “wasn’t normal.” He’s just not familiar with the Airbus “barking dog” sound of the Power Transfer Unit doing exactly what it’s supposed to do—equalizing hydraulic pressure, most often on the ground during engine start, single‑engine taxi, or shutdown.

The woman paces the aisle, repeating “please stop the plane,” and moves toward an over‑wing exit while a flight attendant engages her. And it’s just the hydraulic motor/pump pairing that transfers power between systems, especially noticeable on A320‑family aircraft. It’s like a dog barking through a wall.

“You know who’s also a pilot? The person operating the plane.” — Downvotesohoy (r/PublicFreakout)

“He’s got 3000 flying hours on Microsoft Flight Simulator!” — MelonElbows (r/AirRagers)

The viral caption frames this as “mid‑flight” and implies that yanking an exit handle would open a hole in the sky. Physics says otherwise. Plug‑type doors are held in their frames by cabin pressurization (the difference in pressures inside the aircraft versus outside). You can’t muscle them open in cruise. On the ground, though, is a different story.

The woman, though, wasn’t just causing issues roaming the aisle and aiming for the exit. If she was talking to her pilot boyfriend with doors closed, she was breaking another rule – using her cell phone.

  1. I can’t hear the dog, it always sounds to me like a giant is taking a saw to the airplane. Scary the first time you hear it.

  2. @George N Romey — Speaking of, where’s @Un, because he suggested on DoC that he got a GF, finally. Perhaps, that’s why we haven’t seen him (or his aliases) around much. If so, good for him.
