Air France KLM Is Offering A Status Match Up To Platinum, But There’s A Catch

Air France KLM Flying Blue is offering status matches up to Platinum, the level required to redeem points for first class awards on Air France. They’ll even match United Platinum and American Platinum Pro members to Flying Blue Platinum.

There are two caveats.

  • This is a paid status match opportunity, with Silver costing €79; Gold €199; Platinum €399.
  • This is targeted at U.K. residents, “The Status Match offer is only open to UK passport or driver’s license holders. You may be required to provide evidence upon application.”

Silver isn’t worth very much. Status matches you aren’t going to use won’t be worthwhile given the cost. And most of you aren’t from the U.K.

Nonetheless, this is interesting to see because it’s a very aggressive way to attract frequent flyers in a market and because of the willingness to status match to top tier. Air France KLM generally does not status match at all, either! Yet an American AAdvantage member in the U.K. doesn’t need to be Executive Platinum or ConciergeKey in order to be matched to Flying Blue Platinum.

KLM Delft Blue House Gifts For Business Class Passengers

If I could credibly demonstrate U.K. residency I’d match for Flying Blue Platinum, especially since I’m sitting on a decent chunk of Flying Blue miles after the recent Bilt 150% transfer bonus.

Naturally the list of programs they’ll match against doesn’t include Delta, since they’re part of SkyTeam and a joint venture partner (I wouldn’t expect this offer to come to the U.S., either, since Delta largely gets U.S. point of sale in the partnership) and it also doesn’t include matching against Virgin Atlantic even as it targets U.K. members given their participation in SkyTeam. But a nice variety of programs they’ll consider status matches to.

  1. AF is one of my favorite airlines for international business class. While they don’t have as much saver award and upgrade ability as they used to, I’ve still booked two TATL RTs for this summer at their 50k each way level.

That said, status with them doesn’t carry great benefits above just having a business class ticket. The main thing used to be access to the CDG arrivals lounge for Gold and higher, but they closed it. Given this is only for the UK, I’m guessing this is for the economy intra-Europe crowd, who will get lounge access
