Buy Hilton HHonors Points 80% Bonus

Through June 3 Hilton is offering a 100% bonus on purchased points. That’s the best bonus and best price I’ve seen.

Hilton usually charges a penny apiece for points, so with this bonus is selling points for half a cent each. They’ve offered this before, for instance last June. Here they’re selling points for around what they’re worth.

Hilton will let you buy up to 80,000 points per year, plus bonuses. The pricing here amounts to $0.005 per point. I value Hilton points at $0.004, since I can pretty much always get half a cent in value at least from Hilton points and I have a preference for holding cash.

You can really stretch Hilton points for their lower-tier redemptions. A category 1 property is 5000 points, with 5th night free for elites, so a 5 night stay averages 4000 points per night or ~$22. (There aren’t many of these in the U.S…)

You won’t get bonus points for paying for purchased Hilton HHonors points with a Hilton co-brand credit card, as the purchase is processed by points.com rather than Hilton.

I’m close to a buyer of Hilton points at half a cent apiece, and it will probably be even more attractive to all the folks that matched status to Hilton Diamond.

Comments

  1. Can I use the purchase to meet the minimum spend requirement for either of the Hilton credit cards?

  2. I assume the we could also use a portal to get to the Hilton website and then we could get even more bonus? Use the AA portal and then pay with a CSP? Get 160,000 HHonors points, 1,600 AAdvantage miles, and 1600 Chase Ultimate Rewards points? Anyone see why this wouldn’t work?

  3. @Reed You sure can use the purchase to meet the minimum spend requirement for either of the Hilton credit cards, but “You won’t get bonus points for paying for purchased Hilton HHonors points with a Hilton co-brand credit card, as the purchase is processed by points.com rather than Hilton.”

  4. @Bob I think it will NOT work for one basic reason… the purchase is processed by points.com rather than Hilton.

  5. I’ve had the fee free Amex Hilton card for years. Can I get a second card and still get the 75,000 bonus points?

  6. I’d love to see a deep dive on Hilton by you or Ben at some point. Seems to be the laggard among all the major programs in terms of benefits. No need to do any meaningful amount of stays when $89 gets you all the benefits you need. Rampant point inflation and variable pricing. Why would ANYONE honestly choose this program?

  7. Gary when I log into my account it is allow me to purchase 160,000 points with an additional 160,000 bonus points for $1,600…

  8. @UA-NYC says “Why would ANYONE honestly choose this program?”

Main reasons why people choose hhonors:
    1) Coverage – not everyone travels to only big cities. There are Hamptons and HGIs everywhere.
    2) Low barrier to entry – you can get Gold with a credit card, which gets you breakfast and occasional lounge access or upgrades right off the bat. 30 stays to Diamond which is not hard to get.
    3) Ease of earning points (many different vehicles, more than SPG or Hyatt)
    4) Good treatment at international properties.

Most people earn domestically and spend internationally to get the most value.
