Delta Award Sale From 5000 Miles, Hawaii Discounted Too

Delta puts a specific award on sale usually each month and this month it’s U.S. and Canada flights from 5000 miles each way for bookings made by January 13 and travel with at least 21 day advance purchase between January 24 and July 31.

Delta pretends to no longer have award charts. The truth is they are just hidden. Saver or level one awards are normally 35,000 miles each way in economy for North Asia and 40,000 miles in economy each way for the rest of Asia. For business class it’s 80,000 miles each way regardless of destination.

With all the frequent devaluations it’s handy that Travel is Free keeps an updated chart.

Here are the advertised routes on sale:

You’ll find pretty decent availability at these prices, for instance Seattle – Spokane for 5000 miles one way:

Bear in mind that just because you can get the flight for 5000 miles doesn’t make it an especially great deal. These are flights that sell for $63 – $73.

Still, this is marginally better than using your miles for a haircut or at one cent a point against the inflated $250 price Delta charges for a $139 (or less) bottle of Dom Perignon — which really only gets you half a cent a point in value.

Several blackout dates apply as well:

  1. Any time I can save a few miles I’ll gladly do it, I’ve got no hate toward DL for running a successful business. And no matter how they treat their loyalty program they’ve still got people flocking to their planes.

  2. Just booked DCA-MCO for 5000 miles and the return MCO-ATL-DCA also for 5000 miles

  3. Every time you publish a post about a Delta award sale, I think you just copy and paste the same language you’ve used in previous posts…

“Pretends not to have award charts..”
“5k redemption when it’s so cheap between $63-73..”
“Better than a haircut or overpriced bottle of Dom..”

  4. I prefer Delta’s award search over American’s. It is useless to me to know that a saver award from IAD to Europe is on AA is 57,500 in business if they never open up any space on those routes except of course using British Airways and the $400 fuel surcharges. However, I can see why those needing specific dates would not like Delta because it is a moving target, but the AA search is in a need of serious update and better functionality. Although it’s hardly the worst out there.

Delta’s five-week out chart clearly shows me the best deals, which are available. Also, Delta’s iPhone app is really my favorite, one of the few I can quickly search and even book.

  5. Why did the moderator delete my comment about Delta? It was just a simple question and not offensive in any way shape or form.

  6. @da – your comment was not deleted. It temporarily went into the ‘pending’ queue because as a first time commenter (or at least the blog thought you were) it was flagged as possible spam. I approved it about 20 minutes after you posted. Sorry for the confusion!
