Etihad’s new Runway to Runway program — a loyalty program for the fashion industry — launches Thursday.

There are three membership tiers, it’s free to join, and anyone can sign up.

• Guest status. The base membership level doesn’t really get you anything except marketing emails.

  Open to all fashion enthusiasts, Guest status members will receive fashion news, exclusive access to partner promotions, and be eligible for invitations to special fashion events including fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan, Mumbai and Sydney.

• Silver. Open to anyone in the fashion industry. You get lounge access and an extra 10kg checked baggage allowance.

• Gold. Invitation only — “comprising select members of the international fashion community including editors, designers, models, photographers, stylists, bloggers, executives and other fashion devotees” (bloggers!) — and provides lounge access plus a guest, 20kg extra baggage allowance, priority check-in and boarding plus “Eligibility for complimentary upgrades and onboard Wi-Fi”

Since it’s already February 9th in the Gulf, you can register now if you wish.

Plenty airlines have special programs where if you work in the energy business you get what amounts to the bottom tier of status, and companies get status benefits all the time. Here they’re targeting fashion and giving out lounge access and extra baggage — which is cheap to offer. They benefit to the extent they’re known as the airline of avant garde and beautiful people even if a cameraman might look like me.

It’s no surprise that invitation only benefits might include upgrades, I’m most interested in the complimentary onboard wifi especially because I’ve got half a dozen Etihad bookings in my queue.
