Existing Legacy Starwood Amex Cardholders Can Earn 100,000 Marriott Points

If you have the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card you might not even know it because you still think of it as the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Card — and your card still says SPG on it.

Eventually you’ll get a replacement that looks like:

One of the biggest criticisms of the new program is that the value of points earned via credit card is one third less than Starwood Amex cardmembers are accustomed to. We used to earn one Starpoint per dollar spent, which converts to 3 points in the new Marriott program. The new program lets you earn just 2 Marriott points per dollar spent.

That must be taking its toll on spend because starting this Sunday February 24th existing Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card (Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express) cardmembers can earn up to 100,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points.

  • register by April 7, 2019
  • earn 25,000 points for every $25,000 in eligible purchases on the card (up to 100,000 points)
  • valid through December 31, 2019

Essentially for each exact $25,000 tranche of spend points-earning will return to 3 Marriott points per dollar (the old 1 Starpoint per dollar) for the rest of 2019.

No doubt they’ll then evaluate the extend to which these extra rewards drive the needle on cardmember behavior. My advice, if you used to use the SPG American Express for $25,000 or more in annual spend, consider taking advantage of this. At spend levels of $25,000, $50,000, $75,000 and $100,000 it’s like the old days through December 31.

  1. I have an offer to upgrade my personal SPG/Bonvoy card to a Bonvoy Brilliant. Should I assume that if I accept that I can never downgrade again back to the current Bonvoy card, since it will be discontinued? I ask because I value the current card’s annual free night for only the $95 fee so that is a long-term keeper, but I probably would not want the Brilliant card for more than a year.

  2. Hey Gary, is this just for the personal version or are they doing something similar for the SPG Business Amex? Thanks!

  3. Any idea if current holders of the Starwood Business card (now Bonvoy) can still get the new bonus on a second Bonvoy business card?

  4. Damn it!! I just upgraded 2 days ago my Amex SPG (consumer) to the new Brilliant (former Luxury). I didn’t want to apply again because I was rejected back in August (during the app window) because Amex said I had too many account with them which it was weird since I have 4 consumer, 1 charge and 1 business which was below the common 5 CC limit (charge card and business card don’t count).

Maybe they were counting I’m an AU on my wife’s account? who knows…

  5. They should make it this available for Spg lux cards. Paying a higher fee but getting less points?

  6. Garry, i didn’t see this offer in my amex list of offers. is there a specific link or do you have to be targeted like the previous offer last year? Thanks

  7. Those complaining that it should be available to the Luxury card are forgetting that the Luxury card didn’t get introduced until after the merger. Amex is likely looking to appeal to members that have had the traditional SPG Amex for years vs those that applied for the Luxury card after the merger since those were the cardholders most impacted by the reduced earnings potential. Sorry!

  8. I hope Amex give 2.5-3 points per dollar for the luxury card since this card is so useless if you are not chasing platinum status. Also, marriott move a lot of hotels up 1 category since merger, so the points are less valuable. Right now, I think marriot worth not that much different from Hilton point. Or at least, I hope that Amex has bonus transfer on Marriott like 1:1.5 like they usually have with Hilton or Virgin Atlantic.

  9. I was thrilled to see that my Bonvoy Card now offers free premium internet at participating properties. That more than makes up for the fact that the 35k free night certificate no longer gets me into anywhere I actually would stay, Yeah, right!

Hello retention line, goodbye unless I get a fee waiver.

  10. Have misplaced the SPG card. I wonder if I’ll get a replacement and be able to register or will get Bonvoy and no extra points.
I’m starting to appreciate the value of Marriott points as the only decent transfer partner to Korean.

  11. No mention of annual fees? Shouldn’t that be included on any article written about a specific card?

  12. The link is live now. Sign into your Amex account, find the card and look for the offers available for your card.

  13. Log into Amex account to register.

  14. Dear G50, Tulsabubba: Thanks for your help.
I guess this is only for the personal Amex … my business SPG (-> Bonvoy) Amex doesn’t show the link. Oh well.

  15. Personal only, not business?
Anybody know if spending $30k on the card will get Marriott Platinum or just Gold? During the merger I kept seeing it would only be Gold, but both last year and this year they gave me Platinum.

  16. FYI – I received the following offer for my SPG Business AmEx. It was under the AmEx Offers section at the bottom of the page.

Enroll your Marriott Bonvoy Business Card by 4/7/19 and earn up to 7,500 Marriott Bonvoy points each month for six months, up to 45,000 points total, during the offer period. Here’s how: In each month after you spend $5,000 in eligible purchases on your Card, you can earn 7,500 points. Offer is good for a maximum of 6 months, or until 10/7/19. Terms and Conditions apply.

  17. Hi, Mary Beth.
It doesn’t show up for me – my AmEx account pages says I’ve got 75 “offers” and none of them is this. OMAAT has written, today “Note that this promotion is only for the personal version of the former Starwood Preferred Guest Card, which is no longer open to new applicants. This doesn’t apply to the Marriott Bonvoy BusinessTM American Express® Card or the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card.” This is open to interpretation I guess, and in any case Lucky may be wrong. Anyway, I’m glad you were able to get the offer.
    Peter.

  18. I am having trouble understanding the product eligibility rules for the Luxury card.

I currently have the cards that used to be the Starwood Business, the Starwood personal, the Marriott Business, and the Marriott personal cards.

Am I eligible for the new Luxury card 100000 point bonus from American Express?

  19. Not seeing this offer – only a “welcome offer” restricted to new accounts: Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product or The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility.

Welcome offer not available to applicants who (i) have or have had the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier Business from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase, or the Marriott Bonvoy BusinessTM from Chase, or the Marriott Rewards Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 30 days, (ii) have acquired the Marriott Bonvoy BoundlessTM from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier from Chase or the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days, or (iii) received a new cardmember bonus in the last 24 months on the Marriott Bonvoy BoundlessTM from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier Plus from Chase or the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase.

  20. Appears to be targeted and ill suppose those that receive the offer get in their AMEX offers section
I’ve had the card since 1995 technically when in 1999 SPG launched and took over the Amex Sheraton Club Int

  21. I called American Express and they had no idea what I was talking about. I tried to explain that it was in THEIR press release and they had zero idea.

  22. I have the Original Starwood Business that used to give lounge access at Starwood

Called and Amex told me that this bonus offer not available on Business version of the card.

    Anyone told anything different

Also told that fee will be almost doubling form $65 to $125 .

Idiot agent went on and on about pretty the new card design is.

Does anyone know if night actually posts at anniversary or after paying annual fee.

Doubt a 30 K hotel is worth $125 when factor in the hassle.

Unless someone has a better idea – for every day / non category spend guess I will be maxing out the $ 50 K 2 X spend limit on Amex Blue and the put rest on Chase Ink Unlimited for 1.5 X

I have dropped Amex Business Platinum ( which was 1.5 X on over $5K single transactions ) The Centurion Lounges are always miserably crowded and food has gone to hell. When the Blue came out just did not see the value in keeping it
