Currently flights are available from New York and Chicago to Paris, Rome, and Madrid starting at just $268 roundtrip. These were flagged by NotiFlyr and appear to be available on American Airlines and joint venture partners British Airways, Iberia, and Finnair with some matching from Lufthansa and other Star Alliance airlines.

Here are some New York – Rome fares, showing $260 – $268 on Star Alliance and oneworld airlines.
Searching SkyScanner.com I’m finding the best availability of the lowest fares at Fareboom.com. These are basic economy fares so don’t include free checked bags and seat assignments aren’t free until check-in. Fares are generally available January – March and August – October, with some early May dates as well.
@ Gary — We read your bog to avoid these flights from hell. Price could be <$0 and I still wouldn't book Basic Economy on a trans-oceanic flight.
@Gene: I’m certainly interested in these budget airfares — if not for myself, for my college-aged children. @Gary: Carry on!
@Gene: I’m interested as well. And often the markup to “regular” Economy fares isn’t outrageous, at least to my sensibilities.
@Gary: Yes, do carry on!
This is a different Gene… and I’d surely spin the wheel on a $260 TATL “light” ticket, especially on a 767 where the odds are strong to score an aisle or window seat!
@ All — Have fun! 🙂
Gary just cost me $40 (signed up for notiflyer).
