Free Instant bmi Silver Status (free checked bags on United, Continental, and US Airways)

Via Dan’s Deals bmi Diamond Club is offering instant Silver status for new members.

That gets you Star Alliance silver, so free checked baggage on United, Continental, and US Airways, and some priority services.

Status lasts 12 months from signup. Get in one this one right away if you do not already have status with a Star Alliance airline.

And of course if you don’t want to actually credit your miles to bmi Diamond Club (though it’s great for both really short-haul flights and for paid premium cabin flights), you can check in with the bmi Silver number in the reservation to get free checked bags and then switch your frequent flyer number at the gate.

  1. Thanks Gary worked a treat. Did not have any *A status so this is helpful for the odd flight for the next 12 months

  2. Nevermind 🙂

“you can check in with the bmi Silver number in the reservation to get free checked bags and then switch your frequent flyer number at the gate.”

  3. You sure you get free baggage? I only see that as a gold level benefit. Can anyone confirm?

  4. Don’t rely on being able to switch FF numbers at the gate.

Firstly, gate agents are often just too busy. Secondly, some refuse. I’ve had two separate Continental agents force me to choose: “pay $50 for the bag you checked earlier, or the system won’t let me enter another number in place of your bmi Gold number”.

    As always, YMMV.

  5. I don’t see free bags either …

Silver status offers numerous, exclusive benefits, including:

Exclusive lounge access – Diamond Club, Business and overseas executive lounges
Premium Check-in desks at London Heathrow
    20kg additional baggage allowance
Dedicated Silver Card phone line for enquiries and bookings
25% extra destinations miles bonus each month in addition to miles earned on flights per month
Spend your miles on flights to over 900 destinations worldwide, hotel stays, gifts and more.

  6. Is the part about United correct? I see UA will only allow a second bag free for Star Alliance gold…Am I missing something?

    Same restriction on Lufthansa too?

  7. Will bmi pull the same crock as last year and revoke the membership of everyone who signs up through this offer unless they prove eligibility by sending in their driver’s license and passport, a copy of their latest tax return, a blood sample, and a notarized letter from their second-grade teacher swearing they were a really good kid?

  8. When we check in Continental how do they know we are silver status? Do we get a card in the mail?
    Thanks

  9. I just signed the in-laws up (and will receive big props for saving them on baggage fees for their upcoming trip). The accounts immediately showed up as Silver. Thanks for pointing to this one!

  10. I was awarded the BMI Silver status through this offer, however I just received this email a minute ago saying I was being downgraded to Blue and their decision was ‘final’. Did anyone else receive this? I wanted to make sure you guys were aware of it.

Here’s a portion of the email:

“We’re pleased to see that you recently joined our Diamond Club frequent flyer programme. However, I’m writing to you because unfortunately the link you used to join was an exclusive by invitation only offer and as noted in our terms and conditions was non transferable.

Regrettably, we will not be honouring the Silver status, and over the next few days your account will be downgraded to Blue status. Our decision is final, and we won’t be entering into any further correspondence on this…”

  11. So I just received an email from BMI — “We’re pleased to see that you recently joined our Diamond Club frequent flyer programme. However, I’m writing to you because unfortunately the link you used to join was an exclusive by invitation only offer and as noted in our terms and conditions was non transferable.
Regrettably, we will not be honouring the Silver status, and over the next few days your account will be downgraded to Blue status. Our decision is final, and we won’t be entering into any further correspondence on this.”

AHH— So I guess I wont be enjoying the Silver status anymore as they are taking it away from me.

  12. I got an email this morning revoking the instant status:

“We’re pleased to see that you recently joined our Diamond Club frequent flyer programme. However, I’m writing to you because unfortunately the link you used to join was an exclusive by invitation only offer and as noted in our terms and conditions was non transferable.

Regrettably, we will not be honouring the Silver status, and over the next few days your account will be downgraded to Blue status. Our decision is final, and we won’t be entering into any further correspondence on this. On a positive note though, our frequent flyer programme is one of the most generous programmes around, and you only need to earn 16,000 membership status miles to earn a Silver membership. When you fly with us, or any of the Star Alliance airlines, you’ll reach Silver status in no time at all. You’ll also have access to all our offers and promotions, as well as being the first to hear about our great sale fares. We hope you’ll still enjoy the benefits of your Diamond Club membership.”

The email was sent with a “donnotreply” email address and I can’t be bothered to cancel my membership, although it’s likely now I’ll never use the account or fly BMI at all.

  13. yep, got the same e-mail. Doesn’t affect me too badly, but not liking the bossy attitude from bmi :/

  14. I got the same e-mail this morning too. Do these morons realize how bad the PR is when you weasel out of a promotion? Nothing worse than a reneger!

  15. I was downgraded like everyone else. However, right after I signed up, I called BMI and requested my card to be expedited. I currently have a silver card in my wallet. Do you think that I can still use it?
