Get Up to 30,000 American Miles for a Citibank Checking Account

Citibank checking account bonus: Citibank is again offering American Airlines miles as an incentive for opening a checking account and taking various account actions.

The offer is valid through September 30, and you then have 60 days from account opening to take required additional steps of debit transactions and a billpay in two calendar months.

You can apply on-line, in branch, or over the phone at 866-810-9043 using promotion code DR5MG904XE.

I tend to think 15,000 miles is the sweet spot with this offer since Citibank has sent out 1099 tax reporting forms on mileage offers for banking products where the value is greater than $600, as the 30,000 mile offer is likely deemed to be.

I still like the 22,000 point BankDirect signup offer better. BankDirect also offers miles for average balances on an ongoing basis, and doesn’t 1099 the miles, although there’s a $12 per month account fee that cannot be avoided with a high average balance and they’ve capped monthly mileage-earning.

  1. May I ask how to cover the rental car insurance if I rent a car outside north America, like in Australia or in Europe? Thanks.

  2. I tried the citigold offer before but did not do the DD in time and did not get the bonus miles. If I fulfill the reqs will I get my miles this time?
Please tell me, there is a citi bank branch in walking distance from my home. TIA!!!

  3. I like the 40,000 TYP offer for Citi Gold. One account for me, one for my wife and we’re $800 better off and since the accounts are seperate we stay under the $600 cap.

  4. the promo disclosure states that one must be a citi AAdvantage credit cardmember. I think you should say that in your blog so that people wont sign up for it thinking they will get it

  5. If I got this last year (18+ months ago) and closed the checking account after I got the bonus can I do it again. FYI I never received a 1099 for the 30K miles.

  6. I actually called City to apply. The personal banker checked whether I was targeted for this offer. She could not find my name attached to the offer and asked to call me back. I did receive a call from her letting me know that this still being researched and Citi will let me know by Oct 1st. I have never been asked for the actual promotion code. She said she had to find the promotion attached to my name and came up blank (unsurprising to me).

  7. I just tried to open an account online – got all the way to what seemed like the very last page, then got this message: “We’re sorry, but this feature is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. If you continue to see this message, please call 1-800-374-9700 (TTY:800-788-0002) for further assistance.

We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience. ”

This ‘feature’? Meaning opening an account online, or…?

I know citi is notorious for having an awful website… is this just more of the same for citi? Anyone else had this experience? Any guesses if it actually did open the account, or if I should start over again?

  8. Just a data point:

I took the code above to a branch to open a Basic checking account yesterday and the (very nice) banker informed me I couldn’t use the code as my name wasn’t associated with it. Seems as if it’s “truly targeted” by default, but of course someone else may be able to work around it.
