How To Buy Star Alliance Miles Super Cheap, Just $0.0065 Apiece (Act By November 30)

Star Alliance member TAP Air Portugal sells monthly mileage packages. For Black Friday (until November 30, 2020 in Lisbon) they’re offering more miles than usual at signup, more miles per month, and elite status as a signup promotion.

A ‘Club Platinum’ subscription for 899 euros (US$982) gets you: 54,000 miles up front 8,000 miles per month that’s 150,000 miles total, plus:

  • silver status, premium boarding, and 400 status miles per month
  • 25% bonus on miles-earned from TAP flights (up to 10,000 bonus miles)
  • 10,400 status miles on renewal

That’s buying miles at $0.00654 cents apiece, even leaving aside other bonuses and benefits.

150,000 miles should get you business class to just about anywhere under TAP’s flexible redemption pricing model that makes most seats available for redemption.

Starting off with Silver status is sort of interesting, and creates a great stackable play with the TAP Miles&Go American Express® Credit Card whose introductory 60,000 mile bonus offer also ends at the end of the month.

  • TAP lets you redeem miles for status miles
  • That stacks with earning status miles on the card, 20% of points earned on the card count towards status, up to 10,000 status miles.
  • It takes fewer status miles to keep status than to earn it initially

An existing Silver member needs 20,000 status miles to keep their status. They could convert 10,000 bonus miles into 5,000 status miles and earn 10,000 status miles through spending on this card. Then, this off comes with 400 status miles per month, starting after the first monthly miles credit. You’re right on the cusp of silver without flying. And it makes Gold (which is Star Alliance Gold) quite easy. Just look at the status miles earned on renewal!

Plus, adding 60,000 points after $2,500 spend within 90 days to the 150,000 you can buy through this offer nets you a really nice stash of miles, easily on the way to a couple of transatlantic roundtrip business class tickets in many cases.

  1. It seems like a good deal but business awards from North America are 100k each way so 200k roundtrip. So although 150,000 miles for $1k is decent I don’t know if the value per mile is as high as other carriers. If you just buy a cash business ticket you can many times find good deals on TAP to Europe or beyond from the US for less than $2k roundtrip. Now that is higher than this mile deal you also aren’t invested in TAP currency AND you earn miles on the purchase. I still might buy this if I can credit the purchase to the right credit card for additional miles.

  2. @Gary: That ‘Amex’ offer goes through to a ‘Cardless’ offer, which is invalid if you have another Cardless card, e.g. a Penguins card. Makes the offer less useful.

  3. Can you explain how this offer plus Amex (210K miles) adds up to “
easily a couple of transatlantic roundtrip business class tickets in many cases”

    Business RT is 200K afaik.

  4. Can their bonus miles your earn for $982 be used on United mileage plus flight awards? can they be added to my present acct. balance, to be used for a 1 way ticket on any star alliance member? 800 tel. no. is missing. thanks.
