‘Jets Don’t Use Fuel’: The Craziest Aviation Conspiracy You’ll Ever See [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • What did I just watch.

  • Miami TSA in the American Airlines terminal…

  • Rove is offering 1,000 miles for new members with first activity through September 17, and that stacks with promo code BACKTOSCHOOL for 5,000 miles with first hotel booking by October 3 on minimum $500 booking – promo code STAYCATION for small $250-minimum booking earns 2,500 bonus miles.

Also notable, they’re offering 5x on Target gift cards and 4x on Staples git cards through September 6 (up to $2,000 ‘per transaction’ on gift cards).

The CEO of Rove previosuly emailed,

You can get up to 25x miles at a bunch of hotels without needing a card, while the next best giving a flexible currency is 10x requiring a high [annual fee].

That, combined with the fact that you get the miles instantly when the stay is nonrefundable, means you can often cover your flight for free with your hotel stay. …[A] customer..did this and got 3 free biz class tickets on [Turkish] for 255k miles within 2 weeks of our launch (for about $10k hotel spend). The flights he received were likely worth more than he spent on the hotel. The amount you’d have to spend with any other program to get that is much much higher.

  • The days of the 10-minute turn. It was invented because Southwest struggled early on, had to return one of its planes, and worked to keep the same schedule without that jet.

  • This seems well-handled on all sides. The bias at check-in should be to carefully make sure rules are being followed, and maybe it’s a good thing that check-in agents aren’t familiar with all the ins and outs of different ways to carry guns (they aren’t dealing with this a lot!). They are willing to listen and walk through the rules, and conclude that the passenger is following them. I think that’s great!

  1. Yeah, I saw a TV show where they rotated a Mayan statue to show it was really an “astronaut on a seat” and therefore space people built their pyramids. Scientific illiterates will ignore reality and say anything, just see the HHS leadership these days… Anyway, good for the Delta agents on getting things right.

  2. While the ATL ‘Plane Train’ does not have conductors (it’s automated), I’m glad to hear that the workers who support it are organizing; that’s a good sign for others based in that region who should finally join Delta’s pilots (since 1934) and dispatchers in doing the same *cough* flight attendants, baggage handlers, etc. *cough*
