Lufthansa A380 First Class Awards Wide Open to and from Los Angeles/San Francisco

As discussed at One Mile at a Time and Don’t Call the Airline, there’s a rare opportunity to book Lufthansa first class awards.

  • Lufthansa generally opens first class award seats to their partners only within 14 days of travel.

  • Their Los Angeles and San Francisco – Frankfurt flights are among the toughest to get, even then.

  • Both flights are operated by an Airbus A380.

  • And most days currently have 2 first class award seats open from late November through March (which is as far out as the schedule currently goes).

You can book with United miles, partner first class Europe awards are certainly expensive (you can also book Asia via Europe .. such as US – Frankfurt on Lufthansa and Frankfurt – Seoul on Asiana or Frankfurt – Bangkok on Thai). United gets 110,000 miles each way for partner first class to Europe.

You can book with Aeroplan miles, Aeroplan is an American Express Membership Rewards transfer partner and points transfer instantaneously — for 62,500 miles each way. You’ll pay fuel surcharges, though.

  1. Having spent 135,000 UA miles for two LH F seats out of LAX less than two years ago, including several hours in the First Class Terminal at FRA, I can’t get too excited about spending 220,000 miles for the same thing. But hey, if you have never done it you may have the same thought I had in 2013: “I may never get another chance to do this”.

  2. If I am reading correctly, you can transfer 80k SPG to 100k Asiana, which will get you a US-Europe r/t on Lufthansa F.

  3. Gary – your new RSS clickthrough is absolutely causing me to read less of your material. The only reason I clicked on this link was to leave this comment, whereas before the change I would have read – or at least skimmed – your post in full, as I have done for years.

  4. Hate RSS clickthrough. Not so bad on a desktop, but terrible my phone.

Can’t you put ads in the RSS feed?

  5. I wholeheartedly concur with Ben and AM. For six years I’ve read virtually every single post, but no longer. Since your RSS change, I read maybe 5-10% of your posts, and instead focus more of my time on Lucky and FrequentMiler as a result. Not intentionally… it’s just far more frictionless. I’m not hitting that RSS clickthrough button unless I’m 100% convinced that it’s worth my time, and a header-only RSS feed isn’t going to do that.

I highly recommend hitting the “undo” button on the RSS change.

  6. Gary I agree, and I don’t even look at the site on the phone. I come to this site for the very good content, but it seems that its more flash and less content focused (even if the quality of the content hasn’t changed).

  7. Agree with the above comments regarding the RSS truncation – please reverse, or at least acknowledge these comments and let us know that you will be leaving it as is.

  8. Guys, its late and i probably didn’t get all the info. i have aeroplan miles with AC. How can i redeem them, if i can, for F seats? i don’t get any F seats from the aeroplan website just economy. Even if i can get business seats that would be better than economy.

  9. It seems I can’t get this booking if u want to book thru aeroplan with my aeroplan miles. Is there another way. Try to book for this November. It only offers me economy.

  10. Gary we are T-2 and LH441 from HOU to FRA still has not released any of the remaining first class seats. I snagged one at T-14 but they have not released any others and there are 6 empty seats still. Myself and one other PAX are all that shows booked. Will they fly it empty rather than open them to awards?
