News and notes from around the interweb:
- Marriott’s pre-fabricated hotel rooms going in next to SpaceX.
Prefabricated hotel rooms already outfitted off-site with furniture, carpets, curtains and artwork will be hoisted onto the framework of two Marriott hotels in downtown Hawthorne beginning Monday in a project closely watched by developers across the country.
…On Monday, a crane will arrive and modular units waiting in a nearby parking lot will be stacked and connected to utility lines. By Friday, about 100 rooms are expected to be in place, Wagstaff said.
- KLM’s final 747 flight was greeted on the runway.. by deer (HT: @JohnnyJet)
- Delta A320 suffered a double bird strike but only lost one of its engines
- TIL: Qantas was the first airline to install better seats in separate cabin, effectively the first business class. When I started flying for work United’s business class used to be called “Connoisseur Class” and it matched the C booking code, though the C actually dates to Pan Am’s Clipper Class.
- I can’t vouch for all of the particulars in this take on Air France AF4590, the Concorde crash generally blamed on a part which fell off of a Continental plane ahead of it, but it’s certainly interesting.
- This may be a first, flight crew making an announcement for passengers to take their bare feet off the headrest in front of them.
Re the KLM flight – this was not KLM’s final 747 flight – it was the final flight of that particular 747.
Ahhh, Clipper Class. I flew that many times. Notably JFK-DHA on the 747SP. Long, terrible flight that arrived around 8pm. Configuration was 2-3-2 with a pitch roughly equal to AA’s current premium economy. Though the galley stretched along the starboard side of the aircraft so seating was 2-2 for the first 5 or 6 rows. C class was surprisingly empty on this flight as most of the oil industry guys were stuffed in back getting as drunk as possible.
Managed to also fly it on numerous intra-Asia routes from both NRT and HKG (Kai Tak).
Very interesting, I just got off the phone with the benefits department (888-675-1461) of the Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) credit card, and they are claiming the ATL airport shut down is not a covered benefit. My Delta flights were cancelled last night and this morning, so I decided to rent a car and drive 10 hours home. I was hoping to get reimbursed for the car rental, any suggestion?
