Flight Attendants Shamed American to Clean Dirty Air Vents on Planes

I frequently refer to the legacy US Airways fleet as a ‘basket of deplorables’. We’re four years into the merger and they never added seat power or extra legroom seats to most of the planes. The old tattered first class seats on A321s have gotten new seat covers, but they didn’t even clean the seats themselves from the scuff marks and pen drawings that have accumulated over the years.

That’s just what we can see. Here’s something I hadn’t considered: the air vents on those planes.

Big Singapore Airlines Changes: Paid Seat Assignments, Earn More Miles, New Upgrade Rules

Singapore Airlines has announced ‘new fare types’ that will go into effect January 20th.

They’re introducing higher award change fees, the elimination of upgrades on the cheapest premium economy and business class fares, and seat selection fees on the cheapest coach tickets. At the same time more economy fares will become upgradeable (at a higher mileage cost) and the cheapest coach fares will earn a lot more miles.

American Will Have Seat Power On The Old US Airways Planes — Eight Years Into The Merger

American Airlines has offered inflight power to passengers for years, but US Airways didn’t. In fact, after America West acquired US Airways they removed power from the US Airways planes that already had it. The idea was to reduce weight and save fuel.

It’s been four years since the American Airlines – US Airways merger. And in four more years they’ll finish putting power into the old US Airways ‘basket of deplorables’ fleet.

British Airways Shows How Cuts to Quality Destroy an Airline Brand

British Airways no longer has a positive net promoter score among its own customers. They obliterated their reputation very quickly. And data shows that customers have become more likely to leave British Airways for a low cost carrier.

So rather than making BA more competitive, they’ve given up their competitive edge. There are lessons here for US airlines as well.

Cool Test: Airline Picks Up Checked Bags From Your Home, Hands You Boarding Pass

Federal rules notwithstanding the need to check in is a bit of an anachronism. Requiring it of every passenger does let an airline know a few minutes earlier how many people haven’t checked in, therefore losing their seats, and making seats available to accommodate other passengers. But is it really worth imposing the (small) cost on millions of people per day?
