Rep. Nancy Mace’s Airport Meltdown Enters Week Three — Now Says TSA Is ‘Targeting’ Her

Repubican Congresswoman Nancy Mace, currently running for governor of South Carolina, cursed loudly and “ma[de] derogatory comments” towards airport security and attacked law enforcement. That’s not smart as a Republican, in South Carolina, running for higher office. But she keeps extending the news cycle.

  • An escort detail was supposed to meet her curbside at the airport and take her through security, but there was a mixup over what car they were looking for.

  • So went inside on her own, headed straight for Known Crewmember security, and “began loudly cursing and making derogatory comments to us and about the department,” including telling the officers “we were ‘f—ing incompetent’ and ‘this is no way to treat a f—ing U.S. Representative.’”

As she was escorted to her gate, she continued her profanity‑laden tirade. One officer logged: “The entire walk to gate B‑8 she was cursing and complaining and often doing the same into her phone.”

In week two she declared she planned to sue American Airlines over the incident, suggesting they’re fabricating records about her behavior to manufacture the story. I wrote at the time that whatever you think of Congresswoman Mace, she is getting very bad advice.

It gets worse. We’re now in week three and she’s declaring that random selection for additional screening at the security checkpoint shows that there’s a conspiracy against her. She is looking for whistleblowers and she promises to protect them if they help her out a deep state conspiracy by law enforcement to target conservatives.

She says that “current and former airport employees” tell her she’s being surveilled and that TSA wants to “revoke her TSA status” (perhaps because she is abusive towards them)? I love the hedging at the beginning of this quote, “if these allegations are true.”

If these allegations are true, it represents a disturbing abuse of power and a clear case of political retaliation. No American – let alone a sitting Member of Congress – should be subjected to this kind of targeted harassment simply for doing their job and standing up for their constituents. But this isn’t just about me, I am also deeply concerned about the alleged targeting of airport employees who speak up and are retaliated against.

Come to think of it, “let alone a sitting Member of Congress” is the worst line here. She declares that she should be more privileged, and more protected, than the rest of us. That’s not the way to endear yourself to a populist electorate. But neither is keeping your broadside against law enforcement in the news for a third week – when nobody else is doing it for you.

  1. @Gary: Other than a scratch for your political biases what purpose does this article serve?

Certainly it has none in “View From The Wing”.

  2. Maybe she feels a bit like all those folks ICE just sweeping up? Although, she is much less targeted.

  3. Mace is a public official who wants to be treated specially and had a meltdown at the Charleston airport. What happened at the airport certainly relates to travel, which is what Gary’s blog is all about. What’s the problem L3?

  4. Poor Karen…ahem…I mean Nancy.

While she and I sit on polar opposite sides of our world views, I wonder if her behavior is more a statement about American entitlement than about politics. People who behave like this come in all shapes, sizes and beliefs.

Rather than judge our perceived why behind the behavior, maybe we just all agree to stop tolerating and normalizing this kind of behavior from anyone.

  5. @L3: So create your own blog then. Maybe Rep Mace will help. You could call it “Sounds from the Whine Cellar”.

  6. So a member of Congress behaving badly and blaming the TSA, which is currently managed by a republican administration and oh look she’s a republican as well… Or is she gonna blame Biden for this ?

Members of Congress should be treated no differently going through airport security .

And how exactly is the security situation American Airlines’s fault?

  7. “@L3 – what do you think my political biases even are? I don’t think many accuse me of being pro-TSA?”

    Certainly not pro-TSA.

But metronomically anti-Trump and anyone associated with him.

  8. First off, while it would be completely inappropriate and (I assume) illegal to subject here to additional screening for her tirade, I gotta say, if I acted this way and all I got was one additional screening, I’d think I got off easy. Second, see the hole under your feet Nancy Mace? Stop digging. You could have stepped out early (“it was early in the morning, and their were some misunderstandings and frustrations on both sides”). But, you dug deeper. Now, what’s your next play? I predict it is: “TSA employees have contacted me in confidence to tell me I was targeted, but they are unwilling to come forward for fear of their job and family’s safety.”

  9. @Lighting1 — Maybe misbehaving isn’t a right-or-left, blue-or-red thing, but, rather, an individual-thing. No, sorry, just blame your scapegoats! Better yet, say, it was ‘taken out of context,’ then ignore everything anyone else says.

  10. I consider this situation as a sign of the times. 50 years ago almost nobody would have gone off like this in public.

  11. The Tr*mp-V*nce “deep state” is after Trump-cabinet-loving Nancy Mace? Please get the woman some desperately needed help, as this is not like the upcoming “shallow state” FlyerTalk moderators having a Do to discuss IB/FT facility users in the IB conference room and elsewhere over the weekend.

  12. Crying “targeting conservatives” is getting way too much use, sort of like some of the cries of racism.

  13. @WileyDog — Fair is fair; it really depends on the facts and circumstances. Don’t want to diminish actual discrimination.

  14. @GUWonder Can you or anyone you know send me the link via the dw channel that IBJoel sent around to see the Mod Do online or mirror it? Thanks you for your attention.

  15. Hi Phantomstay, the streamed event was already over as IBJoel really isn’t up for weekend work in the office like he used to be when it came to these events.

You can ask the following person at IB if he, Jason or Joel have a recorded version of it easily available for uploading for FT users: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-horowitz-76346853

Some of the remote-viewing moderators did record the part that was on the screens, but they may be sensitive about sharing any more of it than was already done.
