So Much For Minnesota Nice: Delta Passenger Screams Obscenities At Crew, Shouts Where They’re From

A Delta Air Lines passenger shouts obscenities at flight attendants several times (‘F- you’) while at least once announcing “I’m from Minnesota.” The rest of the cabin remains silent and in shock. Online speculation suggests alcohol or benzodiazepine (xanax, valium).

I’m embedding the video, rather than the Reddit thread where this was posted, because on Reddit it’s titled with the obscentiies. You can go there if you wish, and you’re warned that the video is not safe for work or for work from home, even.

Two takeaways:

  1. the crew here is excellent in showing restraint, professionalism and de-escalation.
  2. so much for ‘Minnesota nice.’

  1. Minnesota eh? The state that gave us Ilhan Omar, Jacob Frey, Tim Walz and others. Brain freeze up there I guess.

  2. Well one person isn’t an example of a whole population, but I live in Minnesota. I’m ex-New Yorker, a non-Christian, been here over 40 years. My take is that it’s a decent enough place, the government is clean, people reasonably pleasant. But in the smaller cities and towns if you’re not a local who fits in then you’re always an outsider who may be tolerated, or not. In the metropolitan area it’s okay but people are still busy city folk, reasonably tolerant (we have minorities from many countries) and a little easier than being in Chicago or especially NY. But the “nice” term is far overblown. I will say St. Paul is much more relaxed than neighboring Minneapolis, but then our police force has a much better reputation for being friendlier.

  3. There is no “Minnesota nice.” It is myth promulgated by the residents of that icebox! How can you be nice when you’re frozen for 8 months out if 12? And MTM was not from MN!

  4. Okay, Michael but to be fair it is not an icebox, that’s a terrible media myth. Yes it gets pretty cold in the winter, especially up north. And there are typically pretty good snowfalls in the Twin Cities from December to March. But at least half the year it is decently warm and in mid-summer can get really hot (no ocean to moderate the weather swings). May and September are pleasant in-between months to visit too. I agree about MTM, though there’s a nice statue of her throwing a hat in the air.

  5. I’m always surprised at how little some of our fellow passengers think about their privilege to fly commercial. Like, in real life, I’ll ‘take one for the team’ if someone tries to provoke me on-board, because I’m not interested in joining the ‘no fly list.’ But, hey, you do you, eh.

And, remember, the individual’s bad behavior is the problem, not any particular identifier, group, origin, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, etc. Oh, I see some are already ignoring that. Cool. Cool, cool, cool, cool…

@Coffee Please, would you like to share where you’re from so we can ‘attack’ your place and people, too? Nah, nevermind, that’d be unfair and unkind.

So, yeah… folks sure do love to ‘dunk’ on each other, regardless. Lest there be a lady or gentleman from the great state of Florida that does anything uncouth… again, doesn’t mean the rest of that state is bad, but some will wrongly say so. It’s a mild prejudice. Not a fan of that ‘practice.’ Call it out when you see it.

As for Minnesota, I’ve only had nice experiences, but I’m sure you’ll find someone who hasn’t, as with anywhere else. Agreed with @drrichard, far better to visit in summer or fall, than winter.

  6. @1990

You would have a field day from where I am from. The mayor of my city is a complete moron. The one before did some jail time.

  7. Lived in the Cities for a decade. “Minnesota Nice” is window dressing for being passive aggressive. Piss a Minnesota off and watch them grind their teeth as they smile and twitch their head as they seeth inside.
Slightly OT: now that there’s a snap of autumn in the air I’m hungry for tater tot hot dish tonight
