Avelo has a new co-brand card built with Cardless (issued by First Electronic Bank) that offers a $250 Avelo Cash bonus after $1,000 spend and 2% back on everything (5% on Avelo). The real value is in the perks—free carry-on, standard seat assignment, and priority boarding—which can make the $99 annual fee pay for itself if you fly Avelo even a couple of times a year.
Aviation blogger and New Hampshire state legislator Seth Miller (‘sbm12’ in frequent flyer forums) is suing in U.S. District Court in Nevada to affirm his right to publicly criticize Avelo Airlines over this service. He raised $6,000 from 70 people to fund billboards criticizing Avelo, but the airline got them taken down.
In order to be an attractive co-brand partner you need a large base of customers who are loyal to your brand. And ideally you have a currency and benefits those customers are willing to accelerate with their spend. There’s just not a huge opportunity on day one.
So Avelo has an interesting workaround. They’re not yet in a place to generate that sweet, sweet co-brand cash. But they can earn a commission on credit card signups.
Houston-based Avelo is a startup. They’re scheduled to operate 630 flights this month, an average of just 21 a day, using 8 Boeing 737s. The same number of flight attendants voted to form a union as Avelo has planes.
American Airlines has already retaliated against Burbank, California-based upstart airline Avelo founded by former Allegiant President and United CFO Andrew Levy which begins flying April 28.
