The Chase Sapphire Lounge at JFK Terminal 4 offers attractive views and stylish decor but is significantly smaller than competitors, gets crowded during peak times, and includes a hidden VIP room still controlled by Etihad.
The product was wildly successful attracting young, affluent cardmembers. But it wasn’t profitable. Early on Chase filed SEC 8-Ks outlining greater than expected costs. My understanding is that in the first five years after launch they’d cumulatively lost around $2 billion on the product.
Until now they haven’t had a business version of the popular Sapphire Reserve card. That’s surprising. Amex has the Business Platinum. Even Capital One has Venture X Business. Yet Chase’s small business cards focused on the entry-level Ink and the mid-tier product that was closer to Sapphire Preferred.
Overall it’s one of the best credit card lounges in the U.S., though, and significantly better than the American Express Centurion lounge. It’s my favorite Chase lounge, edging out New York LaGuardia and San Diego.
Chase’s Phoenix airport lounge will begin taking reservations starting June 23. This is their smallest club at 3,500 square feet and regularly has 30 – 60 minute waits to get in, even with many cardmembers not bothering to try given the crowding and the wait.
Chase is teasing changes to the Sapphire Reserve card with Claudia Schiffer. And they’ve also revealed that a business version of the card will launch, too.
Seeing Emirates transfers disappear for a time from both Chase and American Express, following the announcement of a devalued transfer ratio from Citi, suggests a move by Emirates rather than by any one bank.

United Airlines is taking a page from Delta with club lounge access restrictions, and together with Chase they’re taking a page from American Express with changes to their co-brand card portfolio. But I think they’re doing it a little bit more thoughtfully.
