Is using coronavirus to market airline seats brilliant – good for society, even – or utterly irresponsible? Vietnam has been more aggressive at containment than many countries, more money into the health care system is helpful, and a rebate in the form of health insurance is probably more responsible than a discount on an airline ticket. It’s utterly brilliant.

Hong Kong Bans Foreigners From Even Transiting The AIrport – And Even Bans Alcohol In Bars, Because Sex
Hong Kong has joined Singapore in not only banning foreign arrivals but banning transit passenger arrivals, too, after several foreigners arriving there tested positive for COVID-19. A doctor screening inbound passengers at the airport has tested positive as well there.
To crack down on intimacy as a source of spread, alcohol is being banned from bars though people can still get meals in restaurants.
American Airlines Will No Longer Discipline Flight Attendants For Wearing Masks
United and Delta are both allowing flight attendants to wear masks. Now American has reversed its policy. Flight attendants now have the option of wearing masks, and will not be disciplined for doing so.
Emirates Suspending All Passenger Flights On Wednesday
Emirates CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum has announced that the airline will shut down passenger operations by Wednesday, March 25. Cargo flights will continue. They had already announced a 70% scale-back of flights.
Singapore Bans Short Term Visitors And Transit Passengers
Singapore is implementing a ban on both short term visitors and transit passengers, starting Monday at 11:59 p.m. local time.
As of this writing Singapore has 432 confirmed cases. The city-state is doing a good job of containing the virus. A concern here is resources, having to identify, monitor and treat incoming cases when their health care system stretches thin.
American Airlines Flight Attendants Risk Discipline For Wearing Protective Face Masks
American Airlines won’t allow flight attendants to wear masks. They also still give ‘points’ which count towards discipline and termination for a flight attendant who calls out sick unless they’ve actually tested positive for coronavirus.
Flight attendants with mild symptoms who haven’t flown internationally still report being ineligible for testing. And calling out sick when you aren’t is a firing offense.
A voicemail is making the rounds from this past Tuesday when a flight service manager called out a flight attendant for wearing a mask on a trip, and suggested they just ‘use sick time’.
This Isn’t Ending Soon: American Extends Change Fee Waiver Through May 31
Thursday morning I laid out the realistic pessimistic view that we aren’t going to see ‘normal’ again for quite some time, and that what we even think of as normal may shift.
One indication of this is that American Airlines has extended change fee waivers for passengers traveling through May 31.
One Elite Benefit That Would Help Bring Back Airline Passengers
When I first started flying United regularly in the mid-1990s, all elites had a benefit known as middle seat blocking. When an elite frequent flyer picked a window or aisle seat in coach (in a row that was at least 3-across), the middle seat next to them would be blocked.
As airlines have empty seats, and customers place a premium on social distancing the offer of space available empty middle seat could drive real share shift.
Travel Credits Are Not Refunds. How Passengers Are Getting Hosed Even On Refundable Tickets
Customers whose events are cancelling are getting travel credits, often without change fees, from major airlines. While hotels are waiving cancellation penalties and refunding non-refundable bookings, airlines are not.
For a leisure traveler perhaps they’ll use a travel credit for another trip in the future. In most cases they’ve got 12 months from original date of purchase (not date of the trip) to use the credit. For managed business travelers their company may be paying for the booking directly, and is on the hook for trips not taken. But what about unmanaged business travelers who submit receipts for reimbursement after a trip?
Data: How Badly Are Hotels Hurting So Far?
For the week of March 8 – 14, hotel data on occupancy and room rates is now available. In the U.S. revenue per available room was down a whopping 32.5% year-over-year. Since occupancy was ‘only’ down 24.4% by then, we can confidently state that things are worse this week, and will gett worse still.
