J.W. Marriott Masai Mara Guests Barely Escaped With Their Lives As Floods Ravaged Property

The JW Marriott Masai Mara opened last year and by all reports has been a special place. Unfortunately guests this week experienced a different sort of adventure than the one they had planned – a life-threatening one. Although the area has experienced floods as recently as 2019 and 2020, like other properties in the area the resort doesn’t appear to have been built to withstand them.

Guest rooms were flooded, and guests nearly washed away. Without the quick action of hotel staff, many lives would have been lost.

Solar Eclipse Scandal: Marriott Platinum’s Free Night Stay Cancelled So Hotel Can Sell Room For More Cash

A Marriott Bonvoy lifetime Platinum member’s reservation for a stay during the solar eclipse was cancelled by the Residence Inn in Akron, Ohio without offering the compensation guaranteed by Marriott’s “Ultimate Reservation Guarantee,” highlighting a broader issue of hotel chains not enforcing standards, especially during high-demand events.

Sheraton Still Awful After All These Years, Hilton And Marriott Strategic Moves Revealed In Government Filings

Both chains report that 78% of their revenue comes from the U.S. Their international footprints are smaller than you’d think!

Marriott has more than twice as much booked liability for hotel award night redemptions as Hilton. But that does not mean “Marriott’s loyalty program generated a far higher total volume of rewards for members than Hilton’s did” since Hilton pays hotels less when members redeem than Marriott does.
