The hotel room wasn’t great, but that’s the base room at the property and what they were entitled to. The problem here is the disconnect between expectation and reality, the dismissive tone of the hotel towards Honors redemptions, and… the hotel manager’s appalling response.
Honors points are normally low value, but since the points cost of SLH Hotels is capped at the most expensive pricing for Hilton properties, you can get outstanding value – 3 to 4 cents per point in some cases, as opposed to less than half a cent per point normally. And the hotels are much nicer than most Hilton brand hotels.
Nearly 400 SLH hotels are now online with the Hilton Honors partnership, so that you earn in the Hilton program on paid rates and can redeem your points for stays at their portfolio of luxury hotels. This gives Hilton a huge edge in luxury redemptions – making their points more alluring, even if not super high value.
Hilton has added 3 SLH properties: Hilton says they are releasing only “limited inventory” now with additional space added as the continue testing, in preparation for broader partnership rollout.
With Hyatt acquiring the Mr. and Mrs. Smith booking platform of independent luxury hotels (which meant IHG losing its Mr. and Mrs. Smith tie-in), their partnership with competitor SLH Hotels was always going to end. And in fact it terminates May 15, with SLH transitioning over to a partnership with Hilton.
The loss of these options for redemption is disappointing, however Mr. and Mrs. Smith should bring incredibly exciting hotels, too.
With Hyatt expected to onboard some Mr. and Mrs. Smith properties in the coming months, their Small Luxury Hotels of the World partnership has been in doubt. Now Hilton has launched a new partnership with SLH.
I spent an April long weekend in Charleston. The service was impeccable. And it represented good value on points.

Shortly before the pandemic the partnership had grown to include about half of the SLH hotels. We hadn’t seen any additions since then, which isn’t surprising since many hotels would have wanted to pause investment in integration during the pandemic.
