This new TAP Miles&Go American Express® Credit Card lets your spend contribute to Star Alliance Gold status, their award chart is reasonable especially ‘extra miles’ awards that let you travel on far more TAPs flight than are available to other airline partners.
Cardless is launching a TAP Air Portugal Miles & Go American Express card. They haven’t released a lot of the product details yet, but it’ll be interesting to have this Star Alliance airline enter the U.S. co-brand market. They had just starting making an unfortunately-timed big push for U.S. customers right at the start of the pandemic, with easy access to inexpensive miles and Star Alliance Gold status. So this could be interesting.

What makes this deal is that you can fly from many U.S. cities – Chicago, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, New York, Boston and Miami – to much of Europe, for a price in the $300s roundtrip and it isn’t basic economy – the fare includes a seat assignment and a checked bag. And it’s on TAP Air Portugal, a Star Alliance airline, so you can even credit the miles to Air Canada if you wish.
With this fare you can fly to Manchester, London, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Dublin, Madrid, Milan, Nice, Oslo, Rome, Paris, Stockholm, Venice, Vienna and more – even Moscow or Casablanca.
How about this for worst timing ever? Right at the start of the pandemic Star Alliance airline TAP Air Portugal launched a huge marketing campaign for its 75th anniversary, to make their frequent flyer program relevant for Americans. They offered miles for sale at less than a penny each and an elite status match program.
Members who took them up on the status match, fortunately, had that status extended. And it turns out that the status match offer is still available.
Departures are available from New York, Boston, Miami and perhaps Chicago and San Francisco as well. And you can travel to TAP Air Portugal destinations (via Lisbon) such as London, Barcelona, Madrid as well as France, Italy, Sweden, Australia and even more. You can fly as far as Russia, and Croatia. Or for about $500 more Morocco, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal as bookable as well.
Europe plans to open to vaccinated Americans this summer. Greece and Iceland have already done so, but we can expect France, Italy, Spain and others to follow suit.
And with little business travel yet, airlines are selling the front cabin at a real discount in many cases. But there’s an incredible deal right now on United Airlines partner and Star Alliance member TAP Air Portugal which has business class roundtrip fares from several U.S. cities to several points in Europe starting at just $873 roundtrip.
When I wrote about this fare on Wednesday, I offered that “I would not make non-refundable travel plans around this for a few days, just in case the airline gets a case of seller’s remorse.”
