- United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says American is losing $800 million a year at Chicago O’Hare. I wrote that the number seemed unlikely. In fact, aviation watchdog JonNYC says the second quarter number was $70 million… $100 million loss domestic and $30 million profit international.
I would not have expected American’s worst market to be hub-to-hub Los Angeles to Chicago, but they have 6 peak daily flights which is an opportunity to lose a lot of money. And United operates 9 peak daily flights on the route (it’s also hub-to-hub for them). Southwest flies Chicago Midway – Los Angeles as well.
AA:
"Interesting follow up tidbit from ORD kerfuffle– AA lost ~$100M in Domestic fully allocated margin in and out of ORD in Q2, partially offset by a ~$30M gain in international.
Kirby is correct that most of AA's domestic ORD network is loss-generating for P&L

If AA was losing $800 million annually in Chicago they probably would not have invested $30 million purchasing 2 additional gates at that location.
Unless, of course, the plan is to turn around and sell these gates to United?
