WOW Fare Alert: $69 Flights West Coast to Europe

Wow Air has $69 flights from the West Coast to Europe and it’s for real, you can book a one way at that cost.

They charge more for Europe – US, but you don’t have to buy from them you can book an award ticket or fly another airline (though their returns are about as cheap as you’ll get still under $200).

You can find this on Wow Air’s website or using airfare metasearch site Momondo. Wow Air’s site offers a fare calendar to help you get the lowest pricing:

Here are the markets and dates where $69 flights are available:

For a limited time, $69.99 tickets will be available from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Stockholm (ARN), Copenhagen (CPH), Bristol (BRS) and Edinburgh (EDI).

Fares go on sale today and will be offered for flights between January 15, 2017 and April 5, 2017.

Also available for purchase starting today are $99 tickets from Miami (MIA) and Boston (BOS) to Iceland and also to Paris, London (LGW), Amsterdam (AMS), Berlin (SXF), and Frankfurt (FRA) for $149 and $129 respectively.

Flights are via Reykjavik. Wow air is a low cost carrier, so expect fees or everything.

Here’s the charges for pre-assigned seating (cheaper prepaid online than at the airport for extra legroom seats). Note that their fees vary for short haul, transatlantic East Coast, and transatlantic West Coast.

You’ll pay for anything more than an 22 pound carry on and larger carry ons and checked bags are not inexpensive.

If you travel super light, and don’t especially care where you sit on the plane, you can get some pretty amazing fares for US-Europe travel without the need for a pricing glitch. But if you’re super-vigilant there have been enough airfare sales on legacy airlines that you might prefer to wait for the next one with fewer fees. I shoot for discounted business class and upgrades myself but many readers are just looking to travel and the prices here are super cheap.

  1. The advertised fare makes for nice headlines, but realistically few people want to travel this way so in practice this operates more like a bait-and-switch. A more realistic fare is $402 from West Coast to Iceland, based on the following assumptions :

    (A) E+ seat (35″) reservation is $61 per segment, so minimum of $122 for the TATL flights;
    (B)1 checked bag (because your standard 22″ carryon is too large) = $71 per segment, so $142 minimum (and that’s just to Iceland, will cost more to Europe);
    (C) All food or beverage items cost money (conveniently priced in Icelandic currency).

    Compare to the $400-500 sale fares we’ve seen on major carriers, where you will get free food, drink, and maybe even free E+ if you are elite, not to mention EQM and RDM (miles). Even when I was a poor student I can’t imagine traveling this way (tiny middle seats with no baggage)
