Giveaway: Victorinox Werks Traveler 4.0 Rollaboard

A couple of days ago I mentioned that this blog would be carried both in its usual place and over at the National Car Rental Facebook Page as part of their ‘Go Like a Pro’ feature.

Since National is a perennial favorite of business travelers for their ‘Emerald Aisle’ (pick your own car offering), it makes sense to bring unfiltered travel advice to their customers through their communications channels, I think it’s what I would do if I were them also, brand myself as the place for savvy travelers period and explain my offerings that way too.

They’re not paying me, I do have elite status with National (though they aren’t the only rental car chain with which I have status), and I asked them if they might have a few things I could give away to my readers.

One of the best things a serious traveler can have is a serious roll aboard, and they’ve generously offered a Victorinox Werks Traveler 4.0 to be given away to one of my readers.

They sent this photo of the bag:

For some sense of things, it looks like Amazon has the bag discounted from $500 down to $300. It’s a serious bag, and hopefully giving it away makes this a serious blog too. Hah!

  1. Thanks Gary for all your tips and advice. I enjoy reading your blog and subscribe to your RSS feed. I especially love the Victorinox brand and this would compliment my current assortment very nicely.

  2. hey, I’d love to win this bag– and what I like in a rental car is the ability to plug in my own music from my iPod/iPhone. It may not seem like much but when I’m having do a lot of driving, I don’t want to be fussing with the radio, unfamiliar with the local stations, trying to find something I’d like.

  3. Giveaway entry…what I like in a rental car? Easy, quick pickup, availability, reasonable price, MILEAGE BONUS (lol), and quick drop off! Thanks for giveaway!!!

  4. In a rental car, I prefer low mileage as usually that means there is much less chance the car has been abused.

  5. Like to take as little as possible in the carry on bag. Usually just a change of clothes or two and toiletries. I tend to take longer trips and need to check a bag… but unfortunately checked bags have a tendency to get lost or delayed, so I try to ensure I have at least the basics just in case.

  6. Like rental car agency that has good proximity, wide selection, and the gem of a convertible or minivan (when with family) in the Aisle.

  7. I have this bag that I can pack completely full, but due to the construction, can almost always flip the lid on and zip it really easily. I think it’s becuase the main bag portion is in its own frame and the lid is slightly offset

  8. I require a few things in a carry on bag: that it be within the “carryon size” so that I don’t have to be the inconsiderate passenger that is cramming an overstuffed bag into the overhead bins, that it be a wheeled bag with a handle, and that it have at least a few compartments. Bonus features are lightweight, even more compartments, and spin 360 degrees.

  9. Love the blog!! For me, first thing in any rental is to stop by a store and get driving snacks.

  10. In a bag, it needs to be light-weight. I can’t use half the weight limit on an empty bag.

For a rental car, it’s the ability to sometimes get a nicer car, for those personal trips.

  11. Yeah, gotta say durability. I’m still using my Travelpro from like 96. I also Like good ID, where the handle and wheels don’t compromise too much space INSIDE the bag.

  12. I like a rental car with fewer miles on the odometer than my daily rental rate. And XM!

  13. Hi Gary, I like it when a rental is not the most stripped down version of a car. Its nice when they leave in some of the features.

  14. I am a big fan of national. I’ve never understood why others don’t copy their emerald aisle concept. Knowing I won’t be stuck in a car I don’t like is HUGE.

  15. I like durability in a carry-on bag. I use them hard and no matter how much I spend, something always seems to break!

  16. In luggage, I like easily accessible smaller front compartments where I can stow toiletries and other items that I can access quickly (i.e. when passsing through security)

  17. In a rental car while traveling alone or on a mileage run, I want the in and out of rental car station very quickly. More Kiosks are always best.

  18. I enjoy not having to go to the counter to get the rental car … nothing worse than the line.

  19. In a rental car, I love space and comfort (which I why I love National, because I get to pick) 2 great joys, #1 seeing a new Impala waiting for me at the National full size aisle or #2 coming on a day when the full sized cars are all gone and picking a SUV or van!

  20. I like National’s pick your own car. (within the proper category). The only reason I rent from Hertz more is I use the Hertz Local Edition’s (HLE’s) alot as there are a few choose from within several miles from my house.

I like National’s promo such as rent 2 times, get one free day. Nice promo!! 🙂

  21. My favorite thing about a rental car is having a sunroof. My car at home doesn’t have one, and nothing says vacation more than driving around in warm weather with the roof open and the sunglasses on!

  22. what I like in a carryon bag is I don’t need to wait for the baggage claim or face to missing bags

  23. What I like in a rental car is attention to cleaning, and I don’t mean just the carpets. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten a car where the inside of the rear windshield had never been wiped down, and where the grime was bad enough to interfere with visibility.

  24. I like a bag that doesn’t sound like a freight train when I go over bumps and cobbles – when walking through a new city, I’d rather not draw attention to myself on the way to the hotel. As for a car – one that doesn’t smell like an ashtray is a good start.

  25. I always carry iPhone mount & audio jack in my carry-on to connect to car audio, GPS & music are must.

  26. I fly the AA M80 a lot so I like a bag that fits well into the upper bin on the A/B (left) side of the aisle.

  27. For carryon bags, I want the largest legal size I can get, a logical division of that space to organize my things and durability. For rental cars, I want a decent car at a decent price…lately the pricing on rental cars seems especially high though.

  28. Generally, price is always the top consideration when I choose a rental car. I’m in most of the requisite programs (National Exec, Avis Preferred, Hertz #1, etc) and I am satisfied with just about any model…so pricing is paramount.

  29. I agree with Tracie — I like rental cars with low mileage. Older rental cars are often not well-maintained.

  30. I like a bag that is small enough to carry on, but large enough to hit people in the elbows as they crowd the aisle

  31. A carry on bag needs to be the right balance of weight and durability. If it weighs two pounds but the wheels fall off the first time I use it, I’d be better off with a backpack!

  32. After a long flight, the last thing I want to do is stand in another line to pick up a rental car and then back in line if I don’t like the car they offered. National’s Emerald Isle rocks my socks, in out and on my way. Just Perfect! And the Victorinox is a killer, a total dream bag for any solid travel warrior. I’d love it if I won.

  33. My favorite kind of rental car is one that is ready when I get there. If its clean, even better. Everything else is gravy.

  34. I like a roll aboard size bag that is light, but it should also be expandable and have big pockets througout the bag.

  35. I, too, am big on durability with my carry-on bags. I tend to chew through cheaper ones and should probably invest in a more reliable one – whether I win this contest or not! As always, Gary, thanks for all you do for your readers.

  36. I like rental car companies that don’t bill you for fake damages. Yeah that’s you Hertz.

  37. What I like in a carry-on bag are:
    0) durability
    1) space and weight economy
    2) enough compartments
    3) cool color scheme 🙂

  38. I like large carry-ons, but need something really durable. I move around a lot and tend to destroy luggage

  39. For rental cars, price and unlimited mileage. For carryon bags, lightweight and durability.

  40. In a carry on bag I appreciate durability and ease of use. In the rental car I appreciate flexibility when it comes to return times and customer service!

  41. I would say exactly what Peter Kang said “What I like in a rental car is low price..”

  42. Honestly, what I like in a rental car lines up pretty closely with what National provides.

Reasonable rates, Quick, Quick, Quick at the airport, choice of vehicles/upgrades (some days small is good, others an SUV is the ticket, on others luxury carries the day – an upgrade is more meaningful when you have some choice in how you get upgraded!), power and 1/8 in audio jack to plug in my own entertainment.

  43. I rely on a lightweight, well made back that fits easily in overheads. Cool giveaway~ Thanks!

  44. I like the approving glances a nice bag will get from fashion-savvy flight attendants. . . Lucky for me that flirting with FAs is only a faux pas if they’re female. 😉

  45. When I’m on the aisle choosing my rental car, I look for a low-mileage sedan with a sunroof, satellite radio, and leather seats (in that order). Also, no Dodges.

  46. I alternate between backpack functionality for short trips and rollaboard case for ones where I need a suit or jacket. Used to use National but use Hertz now with current job. I definitely liked Nationals pick your own offering.

  47. What I like in a carry on bag most is handles on the top and bottom. I’m not very strong and 2 handles has helped me tremendously when I’m trying to put the (heavy) bag into the overhead compartment.

  48. When choosing rental cars, I look at price, ff promos, and ability to choose a car that I want (i.e. as opposed to begin inflexibly assigned to the PT Cruiser).

  49. What I like in a roll-aboard:

    must be lightweight
    must be durable
    prefer 360 wheels
must be able to hold more than at first appears!

  50. Having a bag with enough packing space to fit all my stuff is the most important feature.

  51. Clean, smokeless and odor less interiors of rental cars have a long lasting impression on me, can make or break which company i rent from

  52. It’s a great surprise when I’m in a Northern climate in the winter and get a rental car with remote start!

  53. For my carry-on, it needs to have a long handle (comfortable for tall people like me) and most importantly, small enough to not get the evil eye from gate agents.

  54. I like a travel bag to be mobile, convenient, light, and easily fit in overhead bins!

  55. I like my carry-on to be durable because I’m often on regional jets where you have to gate check.

  56. In a rental car? Quick drop off; I’m often running late!

In a bag? Durable wheels. The bag is no good to me if I can’t roll it!

  57. In a rollerboard I like big sturdy wheels that don’t cause the bag to flip with rolling.

  58. I like a carry on bag to be lightweight yet durable with good zippers. Also, I like a shallow pocket for tickets and keys.

  59. I like a carry on thats light and rolls smoothly without noise.
In a rental car I like generous interior space and sat. radio!
    Thanks!

  60. I like quick, painless pickup and drop-off in a rental car company. While I love traveling I like to minimize the time spent on these parts of my trip.

  61. A lightweight rollaboard is ideal.

A European rental car with an English-translated owner’s manual is my dream. Especially as car features (warning lights, auto-lockups, wierd start-up requirements, etc) keep being added. Just knowing where the gas fill-up door lock is located isn’t anough any more!

  62. In a carry-on bag I like the ability to expand it to carry a bit more if I’m not flying. Also, the extra pockets and such are important – I can’t define what I want exactly but I know it when I use it. And being a good roller is nice — I have a Samsonite that has wheels that roll in all directions instead of only straight, and I usually like that, but when I’m on an incline (such as getting on the plane) it rolls away and that aspect sucks about it.

  63. Carry-on must be withstand rugged conditions, expandable & have easy outside compartment access for magazine/book and travel docs. I used a Delsey carry-on for 14 days in 6 European cities/airports/streets. Great bag. Time for an upgrade…Please pick me 🙂

  64. What I like in a rental car: good rates, unlimited miles, cruise control, and great customer service.

  65. The first thing I check for in a rental car has satellite radio. Nothing more annoying then being stuck in bumble town with bad music and/or local commercials about plastic surgery (Southern Florida)!

  66. I need a carry-on that fits as much as possible, while easily fitting in the overhead.

  67. What I love in a carry-on bag is versatility — can it handle a suit, laptop, or a pair of men’s shoes? (or preferably all 3!)

  68. When choosing which rental car to drive off the lot I look for low mileage and safety features.

  69. I’m all about the number of pockets on my carry on bags. And adequate space for both laptop and books.

  70. I want a carry on that is durable, light weight, and fits straight into an overhead bin without having to rotate horizontally.

  71. A lightweight bag is important – especially as some airlines (Lufthansa, for example) are really enforcing carry on weight limits.

  72. I like for carry-on bag to be expandable, but with my frequency of travel, I *need* my carry-on bag to have sturdy handle and wheels — just the basics!

Speaking of which, the handle on my current bag broke, so I’m hoping the random number generator smiles kindly on this entry!

  73. Durability is key especially in the handles and zippers. I want my carry on to hold as much as possible, be lightweight, and fit easily in the overhead.

  74. I like a car rental that is quick for pickup and dropoff. I don’t like to wait around and waste time.

  75. I am always looking for a better carry on bag. This is higher priced than the ones I have purchased. Maybe that indicates it is better. Certainly Victorinox is a well respected name.

  76. I’m sure it’s been said, but I like durability (of the bag material, wheels, handles, etc) and light weight in a rollaboard suitcase. Additional niceties are good structure/features (internal space, pockets, etc) and style.

As for what I like in a rental car, the first thing is lack of smell. I’m talking no smoke smell, no overdone air freshener smell, no cleaning solution smell. I want an odor-neutral car. Also, a clean car would be nice. It’s terrible to have to get in a car with dirty seats and touch surfaces. I once wiped down a sticky steering wheel with a baby wipe (family trip) that was completely blackened. Nasty. Finally, everything has to work. I’ve had cars with broken gas door release, sun visor that wouldn’t stay up, and side mirrors that wouldn’t adjust.

  77. In a carryon, I love lots of storage pockets both on the inside and the outside.

In a rental care, we look for enough trunk space to accommodate carryons and purchases for 4 people.

Hope I win the luggage…. Thanks for the contest!

  78. I would buy and put my lottery ticket in this bag if I win it 😉

If I win – then I definitely have a lot of luck going!

  79. I like a carry on bag to be stylish, compact, and durable. Something that I can be proud to roll through the airport, and that will last me through hundreds of flights.

  80. For bags, I like the wheels to be sturdy and not break off after couple of months. I also like the luggages to be fixable (like TravelPro) so I don’t have to waste material.

  81. Light weight is the most important feature for carry-ons. They take less beating than checked in ones, but you have to lift it up over your head to put it in..

  82. I like a carry on bag that is as large as possible while always fitting in overhead bins without having to be rotated and never catches the eye of “gate checkers.” For rental cars, I like something reasonably normal, no Cubes, Souls, HHRs, etc.

  83. I love bags and luggage that make packing a storing the most convenient for the traveler–ability to quickly and effectively pack and store with a good design. It doesn’t have to be flashy, just sturdy and great for the traveler!

  84. What I like in a rental car is the following:
    1. a place to plug in my iPod and that can be an aux input in the radio.
    2. Crystal clear windows inside and out.

  85. In a carry on bag, I need something light enough to carry, yet durable enough to be thrown around with fragile contents inside. My last bag has lasted me nearly a decade now. I suppose it is time to upgrade.

  86. Like rental car agency that has good proximity to my area of travel, and wide selection of vehicles.

  87. In addition to the usual clothes, I bring a set of resistance bands to use when working out in the hotel room. Compact, lightweight and almost as effective as dumbbells.

  88. I like power locks and windows in a rental car. Don’t make me sit there manually rolling the window up and down in a state where the rain is as frequent as the tollbooths.

  89. I’m not particularly picky when it comes to rental cars although I prefer a brand new car or one that is very clean inside.

  90. I like a durable bag that will fit in overhead bins but also has lots of pockets to put things, and can withstand abuse from having to check bags, and being lugged all over. Most rental cars are okay except for the Chevy HHR, which has awful windows.

  91. I like a great price and the no smoke smell in my rental car. For my carry-on, it need to fit in the overhead bin!

  92. I like a carry on bag to have firm sides as I frequent don’t check a bag and like my items to be well protected.

  93. I’m an emerald aisle fan, too (having switched from Hz)

I like expansion capability in a bag. Carry on while going to the destination, sometimes check on the way home.

  94. I want my rollaboard to roll well without wobbling, to be durable, and not too heavy when empty.

  95. What I look for in a rollaboard is a large front pocket that can hold a 13″ laptop. That allows me to do away with my laptop bag and further reduce clutter. I’m loving the size of the pocket on this Victorinox.

  96. I do prefer National when renting as the check in process for Emerald Executive couldn’t be easier or quicker. i usually rent in Hawaii and some of those counter lines can be scary at times. National is always offering me some sort of discount for weekly rentals and their cars are clean and new!

  97. PS: I wish people would understand that it is a rollaboard (which makes sense) and not a rollerboard (which is nonsense)

  98. What Lou said about being able to hold a laptop. The ideal carryon bag is one that can hold *everything* I need, including a suit, for a week.

  99. I like a rental car large enough for my 6’4″ husband, my favorite travel companion! I’m only 5’1″, so a subcompact works for me.

  100. I like a bag that is big enough to hold everything I need and small enough to fit overhead

  101. Most important features of a Carry-on bag are lots of outside pockets, rollon bad, light weight, correct size (that fits easily in overhead compartment), and soft wheels that does not produce annoying sound when walking on tiled floor.

  102. What I like is for the wheels, or any other plastic bits, to not stick out too far. They’ll get ripped right off.

  103. I like having a bag that is light enough to carry around but rugged enough to survive being thrown around liberally!

  104. A clean rental car is key, and not just superficially. Wipe done all the nooks, like near the door arm rests and the cup holders.

  105. I like rental cars that let me plug in an iPod. With so many podcasts and audio books, who listens to the radio anymore?

  106. I like a clean reliable car which I always get with National! I really do appreciate when some car rental companies actually go a step ahead and offer a cold bottle of water on a hot summer day :-).

  107. What I love about a nice carry-on bag is the efficiency factor. You are able to fit a proper amount of clothes for a short trip and keep sensitive items close, all while not worrying about checking in a piece of luggage and wasting time at the baggage claim. This particular carry-on bag seems durable and should last a long while.

  108. Durability and good wheels – you know, the ones that you can roll over curbs and bumps without the bag flipping over on you

  109. i like when the cars don’t have too many miles on them, even if it’s not the best model car, the feel of a new car makes up for a lot.

  110. Good wheels and maneuverability, the bag has to withstand use outside on the sidewalks as well in the airport on the nice smooth surfaces.

  111. Being able to pick your own car, significantly reduces time by cutting out most instances of returning to rental agent because of a problem with a pre assigned car.

  112. Carry on bag usually has my iPad, bottle of water, printed itinerary, gum, book or magazine for take off/landing.

  113. In a car, price first then convenience.
In a bag, ergonomics are the most important for me.

  114. The rotating handle is what I like most about this bag … perfect for 66 year old joints! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  115. I want a very good price for a rental car. Prices vary all over the board, just give me a consistently low price so I don’t have to waste time shopping all over the place.

  116. Carry-on bag: seek durability (of frame, material, wheels, zippers) and compact for overhead storage, even on the smaller jets.
Oh, not as critical but I think my next bag will be non-black — I’ve been lucky so far with not suffering a bag mix-up, but would hate for someone in a rush to grab mine off the carousel (if forced to gate check bag). The ribbon trick is helpful, but still would be nice to scan quickly after red-eye/long flight.

  117. I really like spinner suitcases. makes traveling less cumbersome. I also like extra pockets to fit smaller items in.

  118. I LOVE what National does…I walk up to the Emerald aisle, pick the car I want and go. Period. After having little say so during a visit to the airport, taking the flight, etc., its nice to be able to make an executive decision and go.

  119. Travel Rule #1 : Travel light
Rule #2 : Win this roll aboard
Rules 3 to Infinity (and beyond) : see Rule #1

  120. I like a carry-on that is easy to roll through the airport, easy to roll down the aisle, and has long-lasting durability.

  121. Victorinox – stands for quality. Too many times my bags fall apart. I appreciate good workmanship for my travel bags. Nothing ruins a business trip or vacation faster than a hole in your bag or a missing wheel.

  122. My last three domestic car rentals have been through National simply because of the Emerald Aisle selection. I suppose I’ll eventually get bored but for now a nominal price premium is acceptable.

  123. I used to travel light enough to take a bag on board, but lately I have been checking a bag. I certainly would return to no-check flying if I had a nice bag like this.

  124. Most importantly, I like to not be told my bag is too big to carry on. I also like a bag that holds a lot and is easy to maneuver.

  125. A travel bag MUST be light. I’m already carrying 10lbs of laptop and other devices – plus my clothes. It must also be able to navigate an urban jungle, and be sturdy enough to last.

  126. I like a carry on bag that is light…I dont need any extra weight as I place my carry on in the overhead! Victorinox rules…they have a great warranty!

  127. I LOVE Victorinox products. I’ve used one of their backpacks for years and it’s held up marvelously. My requirement for a roll-a-board would be lightweight durability.

  128. I would love to be able to pick out a car of my choice when renting. It would also be cool to win that carry-on. Thanks.

  129. Personally, I prefer the option to complete a car rental from a rental kiosk rather than have to wait to speak with a human rep about my reservation. It’s usually faster if the car rental firm has enough terminals in their lobby.

  130. The best bags are those that are sturdy, roll on wheels, and fit in the overhead bins on the plane!

  131. I like a rental car that I can check out quickly and return quickly. There are few things as frustrating as waiting in a long line to return the car at an airport when you’re running late for a flight.

  132. Thanks for the giveaway Gary! I look for a bag with a variety of pocket sizes. A place for everything! Rental cars with a place for everything are also good.

  133. What I look for in a carry-on is durability and a multiplicity of pockets. An ideal bag would have a pocket specifically for dirty clothes accrued on the trip so they can be separated from the clean ones that are yet to be worn. And expandable pockets are very helpful if I buy a few things on the trip. Thanks for the giveaway Gary!!

  134. A carry-on must have a sturdy handle and a stable base (I prefer spinner wheels). A less-than-sturdy handle means your carry-on will be twisting and flopping all over the place.

  135. I always appreciate a rental car that comes with satellite radio at no additional charge.

  136. Better than one in a million chance of winning big. And no chance of loosing… This is way better than the state lottery.

  137. I like the Emerald Aisle and being able to pick out my own car. I usually go with one that has satellite radio.

  138. I need durability in my carry on. My rollaboard is coming up on it’s 10th anniversary and is finally starting to give out. (Well, the wheels are anyways).

  139. I like a bag that’s light enough to carry when fully loaded, but sturdy enough to handle everything from travel books to my DSLR kit.

  140. I like a lightweight but durable bag – my bags get pretty beaten up traveling through Africa!

  141. In a rental car, I like an aux input for a mp3 player. In a travel bag, I like having a suiter. Thanks!

  142. A carry on bag should be light yet durable, strong yet flexible and have enough pockets to deal with luggage accessories while retaining a flat surface.

  143. I like a travel bag that doesn’t have a cheap handle when taking it out of the overhead–like the one I jsut had that broke.

  144. Durability and lightness for a carry-on bag is a must, and if back pack strap is attached, that would be great.

  145. For carry-on bags, being lightweight is the most important in my opinion.. durability is second in line..

  146. I like durability in my bags. Solid construction that I don’t need to worry about. Looking decent is a fairly good second criterion, but it’s got to last.

  147. I always look for safety, cleanliness, and choice in rental cars. I want a rental car company that prides itself on offering clean vehicles with up-to-date maintenance plans. A choice of cars on arrival is always welcome.

  148. What I really like in a rental car is it being a convertible! Barring that, a good price and friendly service with a minimum of “up-selling”.

  149. I like a bag that is lightweight with zipper pulls that will last and one that can fit in the overhead bins of the increasingly small overhead bins

  150. Wow 255 comments already…
I like a light while durable carry-on, and a rental car that is cheap 😀

  151. I dream of a carryon that fits in th eoverhead even in regional jets or maybe I should just dream of flying on bigger jets 🙂

  152. I too like a bag that’s lightweight and durable, and rental cars that are quick and painless to pick up and drop off.

  153. I have a Briggs and Reilly, but my spouse has a Victorinox
I like the B&R Guarantee – I’ve had mine repaired including a bent handle. What’s the Guarantee for the Victorinox?
    Keep up the good blog

  154. Looking at a carryon bag: Just want to make sure that it’s roomy, sturdy and fits into the overhead compartment. Everything else is pretty unnecessary to me.

  155. Enter me in. I like a sturdy bag with good wheels – this one looks to fit that description!

  156. I prefer a carry-on bag without wheels or a rigid frame – those take up space and are heavy, and who wants to wheel the thing around in the subway? And without moving parts, there is a lot less to go wrong.
My wife however loves a nice durable roller . . . although somehow I’m always the one getting it up and down fights of staircases / through turnstiles.

  157. My current carry-on is really just a large backpack. What I’m looking for in a new one are some serious wheels!

  158. I love a carry-on bag with lots of pockets, as I always carry a variety of items and like to have them packed together. My last carry-on was rejected as it was 1″ too long, so I’m very conscious of that as well.

  159. I like carry-on bags that last, so they don’t get totally trashed by being tossed around airports.

  160. I like to get the cheapest car because often they don’t have enough sub compact cars available and will upgrade you at no charge.

  161. What I like in a rent-a-car: What National (and their sister company Alamo) offer – the ability to pick a car. There’s nothing like having more space when I need it, more fuel efficiency when I don’t, plus to ability to try out a new or redesigned model I otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to drive.

  162. My bag should be lightweight, roll easily, fit into a overheads on a regional jet and hold the maximum amount possible. The more pockets both inside and out the better.

My rental car needs to be safe and well maintained, with easy pickup and drop off.

  163. I want a bag that is durable, the max cube allowed for all airlines, long sturdy handle to keep it off your heels, and a durable bag hanger and coupler so that you can hang your second bag off the front and use physics to your advantage like the pilots do. It’s amazing how many people put their second bag on top of their roller bag and “carry” the extra weight on their wrists and arms. If you use the hanger you can balance the bag betwee two fingers and just pull.

  164. i’m a big fan of a soft duffel with compartments. it can fit in an overhead bin easily when others cant.

  165. Seems comfortably the right size to take for a spin in front of the dull airport screeners…

  166. Hi Gary, I love your blog. For rental cars, I prefer the car to be a popular or prestigious make/model (don’t give me a Kia, Mitsubishi, Suburu, etc.). The car should be clean, body not riddled with dings, have built-in GPS, and ideally bluetooth as well. And don’t make me upset by calling a Toyota Corolla or equivalent a ‘mid-size’ or give me a minivan that I didn’t request. Quick-in/out is a plus, which Nat’l usually does pretty well.

For my carry-on bag, I prefer the following attributes: durability, lightweight, roominess so I can stuff a week’s worth of clothing to avoid checking luggage, expandability in case I need it, and a no-quibble warranty.

  167. What I like in a carry-on bag is an accompanying laptop bag that slides onto the telescope handle. Also I like it when it’s durable enough that the handle doesn’t start to come loose after a few dozen trips.

  168. What I like in a carry-on bag? Compartments. Lots of compartments. Exterior ones for my travel documents, and other items I need easy access to… and interior compartments to keep my belongings organized on the road. This bag looks like it’s got its fair share of compartments. 😀

  169. 1. LIFETIME WARRANTY. There are a few companies out there that offer this (Victorinox, Briggs and Reilly, Tumi etc) If they do not have a lifetime warranty they DO NOT have my business. The good news is that as you get these bags repaired, over time, they will replace them with the new ones in the line so every few years you will get new bags because the parts for the old bags are no longer manufactured.

    2. DURABILITY (obviously) but this one is difficult. All bags will get damaged at one time or another and even though there is a lifetime warranty you have to weigh in your time and money in paying for the shipping back to a given company for repair or driving across town to drop it off at an authorized luggage repair. The Werks line of Victorinox is one of the lightest bags you can buy but it is the least durable of their products. The Victorinox Mobilizer NXT or Tourbach are the most durable bags but heavier. So it is a trade off. You decide.

    3. DETAILS. Most bags have suit/shirt hangar options inside. The arms on the pull handle should be sturdy. The wheels should be in-line skate style for durability, The corners of the piping on the outside edges of the bag should be reinforced with an extra layer of material. There should be an outside pocket to quickly slip in a laptop and/or magazines AND a smaller horizontal zipper pocket within this larger outside pocket that can hold your passport, airline ticket etc.

    4. NICE BUT NOT TOO NICE. In my opinion the Victorinox baggage are subtle enough to blend in with the other bags that are in baggage claim. If you have a 27″ Tumi, that is going to get some attention. For international travel especially, I prefer to be a bit more incognito and the Tumi bag is too flashy and will draw attention. FYI Obviously a Louis Vutton bag would be a ridiculous choice if you are trying to blend in. You get the idea.

    5. BUILT IN LUGGAGE TAGS. The ones you get at the airline will fall off a certain percentage of the time. So you need a built in luggage tag.

    6. INTERLOCKING TOTE SYSTEM. The bags you buy need to have a system where you can interlock them. There are many times I had to interlock 3 bags and tote them behind me through customs or a massive international airport or both. OR even across cobblestone streets from my apartment in Barcelona to the nearest main intersection where I could catch a taxi. This system needs to be well balanced so try it out before you buy. Victorinox bags have always served me well.

    Did I forget anything?

  170. I like both my rental cars and my carry on bag to be RED.

    Otherwise, I’m not really picky.

  171. What I like in a rental car is choosing my own car, usually something I would never drive at home.

  172. Most important for a bag: it has to roll well, and be stable (I hate bags that tip over sideways when you turn too abruptly).

  173. One thing I miss about my old carry on is a top pocket that is shallow – great for keys, phone, wallet when going through security.

  174. What I look for in a rental car: Quick/easy pickup and dropoff and competitive proce.

What I look for in a carry-on bag: Fits in the overheard (tougher than you’d think with all the different dimensions of overhead for different planes), durable, large capacity (so no wasted interior space).

  175. I don’t understand why rentals are stripped down so badly — rental cars should be one of the main ways for car manufacturers to market their vehicles. I never have a chance to drive any other car models, except when I rent a car. At that point I’m a captive audience for Ford or Chevrolet or whoever’s manufactured it. They should be using that time to show off their best features: responsive engines, integrated technology, strong safety features, etc. Instead, I get a stripped-down Ford Focus, and I think “wow, this is a piece of junk.”

  176. Most important to me regarding a carry-on bag is that it’s lightweight, fits in the overhead bin and that it has an easily accessible front section for putting in newspapers and magazines.

  177. I like for my bag to be lightweight and durable. In terms of a rental car–I prefer those that get great gas mileage and is fun to drive.

  178. What I would like in a carryon is a sweet hot male who has elite status in multiple airline and hotel programs. Oh wait a minute, you probably weren’t asking what I wanted INSIDE a carryon, were you? Come to think of it, if he could fit inside a carryon, I probably wouldn’t want him.

  179. What I like in a rental car is fitting as many clowns as possible. For greatest effect, they should wear floppy shoes and funny wigs – but for the purpose of this gag, quantity is much more important than quality.

  180. The possibility of picking the rental car of my choice is key. There are so many times I go back to the counter and ask if they have another car.

  181. i like a rental car that is comfortable, has a gps built in and also a company that can give you an extra set of keys (just in case).

  182. I like rental cars that have low mileage, smell clean, and have a usb power port.

  183. I really like the Emerald Aisle. National hit the nail on the head with this. Even though most of my car rentals are for leisure, it’s very useful to be able to pick a car based on specific needs (e.g. traveling with kids or without, with lots of luggage, or without, etc).

  184. How about what I would like in a rental car? A GPS / sat-nav that isn’t regularly priced at $10 a day. Especially traveling overseas, I would sometimes prefer not to tote my own GPS and friction mount with me but I do it because it saves me $70 to $200 on my long rentals! (Mobile phones are an option but battery hogs and reliant on data connections for Google Maps.)

  185. A carry-on with a long handle is a must. There is nothing worse for me than having to hunch down as I try to wheel a bag to the gate.

  186. Carry-on bags should (1) have wheels and (2) be lightweight. Unfortunately, those features are often at odds with each other!

  187. I love how lite-weight this bag feels, it would be an amazing bag to use for all my travels!

  188. I would love this bag. The one I have now is beat up and I could really use a replacement for some trips I have planned this summer.

  189. I like being able to fit a carry-on bag fit in the overhead compartment without issue (i.e. have to fit sideways, have to gate check, have issues on international baggage requirements, etc).

  190. I like a superlight bag with wheels small enough to fit wheels first in the overhead bin.

  191. I want a bag that will last and one that isn’t too heavy or bulky before I even begin to pack.

  192. I prefer carry-on bags that have heavy-duty wheels and a solid handle. I also prefer a bag that expands when needed.

  193. I like a carry-on bag which is light and nice-looking, and fits easily into an overhead bin.

  194. I really like carry on bags with a few good outer pockets to keep things in for easy access

  195. Contest Entry:
In a rental car I really enjoy Sirius Radio – makes it easier when youre in an unfamiliar area to know what radio stations you like.

  196. Although it won’t fit in my rollaboard I’m hoping my new folding bike will fit in my checked bag.

  197. I like a backpack style laptop case that is durable and has plenty of storage. It’s amazing how full I have been able to fill my 10 year old Trager and the fact it has (mostly) held up.

  198. I love a durable rollaboard, I generally like them in off colors (red, purple) so I can easily spot my bag. I had a red Victorinox that lasted for about 7 years and close to a million miles, but that’s probably because I carry on 99.9% of the time!

  199. Luggage must be strong, durable, and reliable. Once I bought a cheap suitcase that didn’t make it past the first leg of the trip. It was a huge inconvenience.

In my experience, Victorinox luggage is fantastically reliable (and beautiful too). A bit pricey, but well worth the cost.

  200. Rollaboard – durability and has to be light
Rental car – clean, smoke-free, low miles and doesn’t have the handling and ride of a boat

  201. I’d like my carry-on to be small enough to be allowed on board, but to actually open into a magical room full of all my possessions.

  202. Lightweight is by FAR the most important thing; durability is second. Looks are a distant third.

  203. Since we use our carry-ons more and check luggage less these days, it is important to have a carry on that is sturdy, well balanced so that it is not always tipping over when you are navigating with it, durable and stain resistant.

  204. I want luggage that’s light weight and if wheeled, easy to maneuver without knocking over other people, things or myself in the process.

  205. I like luggage that you can easily pick up and hold in front of yourself as you make the long trip down the isle to the back of the plane

  206. I like bags that have a lighter color lining. Black interors make it difficult to find items.

  207. My “must-have” in a rental car is a trunk! Rental cars filled with vacationers’ baggage is easy prey for smash & grab thieves. I’m looking at you, PT Cruiser.

  208. I would never buy a $300-500 roll-a-board, so this is the only chance to get one. Thanks Gary

  209. In a rental car: some way of connecting my iphone/ipod, built in navigation, and plenty of trunk space for luggage/golf clubs.

  210. Carry On: Light & Durable… plus I like lots of compartments for makeup, electronics, etc. 🙂

  211. I like a light-weight carry-on bag so I don’t stagger when I put it in the overhead bin 🙂

  212. Something I am finding more and more valuable are telescoping handles on rollerbags that can stand up to a beating!

  213. I usually like a Vera Bradley carry-on, the fabric is light and it can smooch into a tight spot.

  214. For rental cars, price is the main driver but I’ll give up a little in price to get access to the Emerald Aisle!

  215. I like a rental car company with no additional fees for those under 25 years old! 🙂

  216. I like a clean car in good condition (and no bald tires) that drives well for a good price. Too much to ask?

  217. I like a carry-on bag that has room for my laptop, 2 days worth of business clothes, and a pair of shoes – and still fits under the seat in front of me. Haven’t found one I love since Atlantic discontinued their “mobile office” model several years ago. This looks like a really nice rollaboard bag, and I’m sure I would survive without being able to fit it under the seat. 🙂

  218. When it comes to bags, or any travel equipment for that matter, I’m a real weight weenie. Durability comes second.

  219. A change of clothes and toiletries in a roll-aboard is my insurance against the airline losing my bags.

  220. to pick a car that I am comfortable with and not take what ever car is left on the lot.

  221. I just love it when I rent a car and is has that new car smell, feel, and the odometer has just a few thousand miles on it.

  222. I want a rental car company who has the car you reserve and not “a free upgrade” to a gas guzzler.

  223. I like a carry-on to have a handle that is easy to pull up and push down. I also prefer ones that have mesh pouches to put things like toiletry kits and such.

  224. If there were a rental car company that assured me of a specific car at booking and had an iPod plug-in in every car, I’d use them every time.

  225. I need a bag like this to fit my full size feather pillow!!
and everything else a lady carries on to an aircraft.

  226. If the car rental company offers free upgrade to hybrid cars, I will prefer to rent from them. because it’s good for the environment and also good for my wallet.

  227. I’d like to win your bag Gary, and then you can try to win the one I’ll be giving away in about 4 weeks when it is my turn to blog for National. If you pull my name, draw again or give it to the charity of your choice. National is showing they care about frequent travelers with this exposure. That’s nice to see.

  228. In a bag, I like:loooooong handles, as I’m 6′ plus and a slim profile that means it actually fits in an overhead bin. 🙂

  229. Gary, I just recently added your blog to my daily routine. Thanks for all the tidbits. What I look for in a bag is sturdiness. I like knowing my bags are going to go the miles with me.

  230. What I like in a carry-on are wheels that don’t squeek, and durability from trip to trip…and a good an easy zipper to open the case…

  231. I want a rental car I can choose myself – so I like them to be nice ones on the Emerald Isle!

  232. What I like in a rental car is a GPS system. When renting a car in an unfamiliar location, a GPS saves valuable time.

  233. I like the perfect intersection of durability and light weight in a rollaboard. I want it to last and stand up to the abuse of travel, but if it’s too heavy to begin with then I won’t be able to load it up with everything I need for a trip. Then I might have to go with a checked bag, and who want to do that?

  234. I love a carry on that rolls quietly. For some reason it annoys me when my carry on chatters like a Gatling gun when I walk down a moving sidewalk.

  235. I like a wheeled bag for long walks through badly designed terminals. I want the bag to not fall over when my computer bag is attached to it in some manner. I would prefer it to be waterproof because of the bad United Express “gates” at ORD. Finally, I like free stuff

  236. At the moment, I would take a rental car that is clean and does not smell. The last few rental cars I have had have been dirty and smelly. Maybe I have been just having bad luck!

  237. For a rental I like a car that is at least something close to the class I intended to rent…if I reserve a subcompact I didn’t mean to rent an Explorer.

  238. I like a carry-on bag that can truly be carried on. One with multiple compartments – inside mesh/zip compartments and outside easy access compartments. Wheels that don’t drag with a little weight are a plus as well.

  239. What I like in a rental car is a USB port so that I can charge my phone without having to take my car charger while traveling.

  240. If you have the executive status, I think National offers better product than Hertz and Avis. Especially if you go with a group, you can pick the right size (even a SUV) based on how many people will ask for the ride.

  241. Quiet wheels! Nothing more annoying than a loud rollaboard, especially down an older sidewalk.

  242. With a great looking and durable bag like that, I could do two week trips several times a year for a long time!

  243. I like my carryon to be big enough to pack for a weekend, but small enough to be able to chug it along without any problems.

  244. I like the “pick any car” option at National. They also have the easiest checking out and return procedures.

  245. Favorite thing is when rental car includes a map without me bugging them … Hey I don’t know where I am

  246. In a carry-on bag, I like easily accessible out compartments that make it easy to remove computers and toiletries at security, but which do not stick far beyond the body of the bag and make it difficult to squeeze into the overheard bin.

  247. I like the car clean and full of gas. It’s annoying to pick up a car that looks like it was just partied in or out of gas when I need to get somewhere.

  248. When choosing rental cars, I look at price, ff promos, and ability to choose a car that I want. wow, could definitely use a new roll aboard bag!

  249. On a roll-aboard I truly enjoy maximum carry-on sizes so that I can afford myself a smug smile when a sceptic gate agent try to put my bag to the test.

  250. I just checked out that bag on Amazon….that’s nice….real nice. My current bag is very beat up, but this bag looks much more durable.

  251. Contest entry: What I like in a bag is something light but sturdy and that rolls easily.

  252. Never owned a “rollaboard” bag. I watch with awe when I see them being stuffed into overhead bins. I’d like one like a tardis: svelte, easy to roll down an aisle but accessible, high-tech space inside.

  253. I like sturdy material on the bag, and a pull up handle wide enough and heavy enough not to wobble when pulled.

  254. I like a rental car that is free from strange odors (don’t always get that, but I’m always relieved when I do!).

  255. When looking for a rental, price is number one but the ability to upgrad weighs into the equation as well.

  256. For me, the most important things about a rollaboard bag are:
    1. durability
    2. fits in overhead bins
    3. weight. Less weight of bag = more stuff to load inside for me!

  257. Whenrenting cars I like to use the kiosks becuase they are usually much quicke. I also appreciate a quick turnaround when dropping off.

  258. Thanks, Gary, for making this prize available to your readers! The bag is just what I need to fit airline concourse sizers.

  259. What I like in a carry on bag is the ability to be both light weight, have different compartments and easy to fit in the overhead.

  260. What I like in a rental car are major controls ( headlights, AC/heating, windows, radio) that operate intuitively.

  261. A carry on bag has to be light enough to wheel comfortable in an airport and I like it when it is small enough to fit in the overhead bin.

  262. I like my rental car to be clean, with the gas tank full. I now warm the car up to make sure the level is full. A few times in the past, I drove off only to find the level far from full.

  263. Best bag features: weight (and not much else). Have really liked the Rick Steves bags in the past, but would love to try something new.

  264. I like my bag to have a separate compartment on the inside of the lid for shoes, toiletries, etc.

  265. I love the surprise of getting an upgrade in a rental car because they are out of the standard car I booked !! They are typically lower mileage and newer.

  266. What I like in carry on bag is minimum weight, durability and being able to pack enough clothes to get me through my business trip! What I like in a rental car is getting upgraded to something other than the norm!

  267. Durable, light (trying to keep under the typical 10-12KG limits on some euro airlines), fits in overhead, and most importantly – maneuverable.

  268. I like a carry-on bag that is lightweight and rolls easily. I also like durability!

  269. What i’d like in a rental car is a complementary pack of wet wipes, as you can never have enough of those…and more than one trash bag.

  270. I like being able to choose my rental car. I always rent from companies that allow me to choose cars from the lot vs companies who just assign cars.

  271. I like a carry-on bag that is lightweight and just under the standard maxiumum allowable size. I also like bag that have heavy-duty zippers for durrability

  272. I like bags that are lightweight and durable, and it wouldnt hurt if it had a bit more pizzazz than the standard black (hot pink anyone?) 🙂

  273. For me the perfect carry on has an outside pocket to hold my liquids bag. I have gone from being an over-packer to a zealous carry on only traveler. I only use the bag for clothing and toiletries. My iPad, charger, and phone travel in a small back pack. An outside pocket for the liquids bag means not having to open bags to go through security!

  274. I like a rental car to have less than 15,000 miles, working windshield wipers, and not to smell like smoke.

All of these are things that have been “exactly” absent from one of National’s competitors on recent rentals. To their credit, though, they’ve made things right every time.

  275. I’m partial to Briggs&Riley. But the Victorinox bags have the handle that turns 90 degrees, which makes it much easier to pull.

  276. I prefer National for my rental car company because I get to choose my car. There are lots of other reasons, but this is the singular most important difference between National and the other rental companies.

  277. I like anything that speeds up the check out process. I particularly like when I am not forced to listen to an upsale pitch.

  278. I like a bag that is durable and fits within the overhead compartment. I like it to expand in the rare instances I make a purchase for my wife and/or child.

  279. My bag has to be durable and, when zipped to it’s smallest size, must meet the dimension requirments for carrying on the airlines.

  280. I always bring my own cd’s but every so often on other brands, the stereo won’t play mp3 cd’s.

  281. I like having a lightweight bag that wheels easily and can hold enough clothes and materials for an international trip without checking luggaage. I prefer to have my bag with me for ease of changing itineraries if needed.

  282. I like when you can pick the car you want, it’s reasonable and is free of that ash tray smell.

  283. I like a bag that rolls smoothy and can handle the occasional gate check without breaking.

  284. I like a carry on that’s sturdy, but light enough to lift up to store in the overhead bin.

  285. I like a bag is one that rolls easily: my heals aren’t run over, the bag doesn’t tip over a curb

  286. I like it when carry-on have expandable option (on zippers) and when the wheels are rolling smooth and stable (some kind of rubber rather than plastic)

  287. I like a bag (the smaller one) with lots of pockets — for umbrella, water bottle, passport and boarding passes, keys, eye mask, warm socks, etc. I got a new version of my old faithful and it doesn’t have as many of these good spots.

  288. I like renting a car where it always has the automatic locking and trunk opening with the fob. As a solo woman traveller this makes a big difference to me and is greatly appreciated. Plus Sirus with the Bruce Springsteen channel available 🙂

  289. Sturdy enough to handle years of abuse yet light enough to heft in and out of overheads…

  290. I like a NO HASSLE rental car experience–no hidden extraS, don;t bug me about the insurance, and no need to inspect it with a magnifyng glass when I return it!

  291. I like a bag that maximizes the use of space in the overhead, by making its rolling machinery as small as possible.

  292. I like a rental car with a trunk so I can hide my personal belongings and decrease the chances of theft. Thanks for the great blog!

  293. I like sturdy, well made, nice looking carry-ons, like Victorinox.

Thanks for giving away free stuff! I like free stuff.

  294. I like winning. Thanks for randomly selecting me! Rental cars are fun, because you get to drive something different than your own car.

I also like carry-on bags that are lightweight and can hold a lot of stuff for international travel, since I don’t check luggage.

  295. I like luggage that are sturdy and the zipper won’t break after a year. Tom Bihn do make very good laptop bags. I wish they’ll go into luggage business.

  296. I like a carry-on that is light and maneuverable but strong. I recently had a check-through zipper ripped off – just as it reached the carousel – so I’m very fussy about zippers now.

  297. Protected corners. I’ve had several bags wear out in the corners, making the zipper inop. Doesn’t matter how well the bag is constructed once the zipper goes Tango Uniform.

  298. I missed the contest, but I’ll offer the advice to National: I want cruise control without an upsell. If none of your compacts (or midsize or whatever) on the lot have cruise control, help me find a car that does, and don’t charge me extra for it.

As for bags, I love the Victorinox Werks series — they’re lightweight, and the warranty support can’t be beat.
