3000 United Miles First Booking Bonus From Rocketmiles

Rocketmiles is offering a 3000 United mile bonus for making a first hotel booking through the site. That’s in addition to the normal miles earned for a booking.

The offer is for new accounts opened after October 14 that make a booking by November 30 and complete the hotel stay by April 1. This is a one-time bonus, mileage offers displayed on the website do not include the 3000 miles which will be added separately after the fact.

Loyalty Lobby implies that you can get this 3000 mile first booking bonus and the 1000 mile bonus for being referred by an existing member (“You can access this offer page here and you can get 1,000 additional bonus miles for first booking by signing up using the link here.”). I’m not so sure that’s correct.

When Rocketmiles offered 3000 bonus miles with JetBlue for first hotel booking, I confirmed with a co-founder of the site that that bonus wasn’t stackable with the 1000 mile bonus for being referred. I would not count on that additional 1000 miles without greater clarity form the site.

I had had a referral bonus to offer of 2000 miles (in other words, I was foregoing my 1000 mile referral credit and arranged to have it given to you instead), unfortunately that was made available to me only through mid-July. Now when you sign up through my link we each get 1000 miles after your first booking as the standard referral offer.

Rocketmiles now features over 100 cities — they don’t have hotels everywhere, and have a limited set of hotels in each city. That’s about triple the size they were when I first wrote about then ~ 5 months ago.

I’d expect United to have the biggest signup offers, as they’ve made a strategic investment in Rocketmiles (concommitantly, competitor site PointsHound lost its United partnership).

We can all use a whole bunch more United miles to make up for the big MileagePlus devaluation that’s going into effect February 1.

  1. Looks intriguing… A Christmas week reservation I’ve made at a Crowne Plaza is actually $5 cheaper overall than through Priority Club/IHG website – and the RocketMile rate includes breakfast. But the downside seems to be that (unlike with a “regular” reservation) Rocketmiles charges your credit card immediately, even though the reservation is cancellable. This makes me a little nervous…. Any feedback from folks who have indeed canceled a reservation? Was the money returned to one’s credit card promptly?

  2. If booking a Hyatt reservation through RocketMiles, will I still be eligible for the Hyatt promotions (5k extra for 5 nights…), stay and night credits, and suite upgrades?

I’m sure this question has been asked before, so I apologize in advance.

  3. @Sam — Despite the recent massacre of UA’s award chart, this is actually an opportune promo, because a lot of people (myself included) are going to cash out their miles, but need a few more to reach that award they need. So this is a quick and “free” (if you were going to book a hotel at this cost already) way to do so.

@Gary — Are you sure the account has to be new (i.e., opened after 10/14) also? The terms are vague — “…customer must create a new account on Rocketmiles and complete a booking through Rocketmiles between 12:00 AM (CST) on October 14, 2013…” That doesn’t make it clear if the date applies to both creating the account AND booking or only the booking part. Could you clarify with the owners, since you seem to know them? Or tell us straight up if you already know for sure?

I have an account that I think I opened before 10/14, but have never used, so it’s an important distinction for me.

  4. @mogon – I’ve cancelled reservations on rocketmiles a few times. Money was back on my account within 1 day. Their customer service is quick to respond either via email or phone (they ACTUALLY pick up the phone)

  5. Strange setup — in essence a flexible rate becomes pre-paid, but cancellable? You don’t pay anything at the hotel (incidentals, aside)?

  6. I opened my account several months ago, but only recently completed my first purchase. There is no requirement for the account to be new. Any first purchase is eligible, as long as it’s booked between the eligible dates.

  7. Well…. I pulled the trigger on the booking. But I’m not happy with how little detail is on the confirmation. Specifically selected a King Executive Room with the breakfast option – but the receipt says NOTHING about what kind of room or breakfast being included. There also was nowhere to include my PC/IHG #. Makes me very nervous….
