IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card

This card’s 70,000 point signup bonus after $1000 spend within 3 months. Here’s an extensive review of the card’s value proposition. Of course the most highly leveraged use of the points is with IHG’s ‘PointBreaks’ redemptions which are hotel reward nights for just 5000 points.

The Next Round of PointBreaks Will Be Up Tuesday

IHG Rewards Club will be posting the list of the latest PointBreaks hotels available between May 26 and July 31 on Tuesday, May 26.

They’ve released a small preview of hotels that will be included:

  • InterContinental® hotel Nha Trang, Vietnam
  • Crowne Plaza® hotel New Delhi Mayur Vihar Noida, India
  • Holiday Inn® hotel Andorra, Europe
  • Holiday Inn® hotel Cordoba, Argentina
  • Holiday Inn Express® hotel Frankfurt-Messe, Germany, Europe
  • Staybridge Suites® hotel Tallahassee I-10 East, Florida, United States
  • Candlewood Suites® hotel Washington-Fairfax, Virginia, United States

5000 points per night is a fantastic deal, the best redemption value for hotels bar none. This is especially leveraged for higher end hotels that may otherwise run 40,000 points per night. But they have to be available for a hotel you can use during the promotion period. And you have to act fast, the most desirable properties tend to get pulled down from the list rather quickly.

    Intercontinental Nha Trang

You can only book 2 reservations per hotel using PointsBreaks during each offer period. The idea is to prevent folks from sitting on (or bartering) reservations. A pain for some, will help avoid too many cancellations for participating hotels, and should help others to get in on the deal too.

Four years ago it was rumored that PointBreaks would be discontinued, but they were kept precisely because of how passionate members are about them.

Reserving These Rooms for $35 Per Night

You can buy all the points you wish at 7/10ths of a cent apiece.

In general that’s more than I think they’re worth, so I don’t stockpile the points, but they’re certainly well-used for PointBreak redemptions and a fantastic deal even straight-up buying the points.

  1. Contrary to what seems to be popular opinion regarding the value of IHG points, I have often found fabulous deals even beyond the obvious point break promotions. For instance, I spent 200,000 points for five nights at the Intercontinental Amstel Amsterdam next April. While the reward night cost has since risen from 40,000 to 50,000 points per night, it’s still a bargain for a grand hotel that would otherwise cost over $600 per night. And don’t forget the ten percent point rebate for IHG credit card holders.

  2. ahhh.. the exact reason why I got the 100k point package during the Daily Getaways… Come on $28 hotel rooms! 🙂 lol

  3. @DaninMCI- Definitely not happening anytime soon son, just like you won’t see one in NYC or London.

  4. contrasting this post with loyaltylobby’s post. High levels of salesmanship detected.

  5. I value IHG at a penny/point, because that’s what they are worth to me for the type of travel I do most often. I just used my 70K intro offer for 5 room nights at Holiday Inn Express (in Portland, OR, and a hotel along the drive from San Jose to Portland). Booked for cash, those rooms would have cost about $150/night. Rooms were easy to find, easy to book, and can be cancelled for full refund up to 24 hours in advance. Not aspirational travel, but nothing to sneer at if you’re visiting family and need a pleasant, reliable place to stay. So far, I don’t need a Points Break deal to love this card.

  6. Agreed with @PSL and others, stayed at the ICH Hua Hin last year for 225K points for 3 room/3 nights (got 10% back for CC benefit refund on award stays). This year, we burnt 270K IHG points for 3 room/3 nights at the Holiday Inn Resort in Patong Phuket. Got 10% back on CC redemption PLUS 10% back as an Ambassador benefit for a total refund of 54K points making the stay a real bargain. Both stays at awesome seaside properties during high season (Songkran – Thai New Year).

  7. How are you guys earning hundreds of thousands of IHG points so quickly? The Chase bonus can only be had every 24 months.
