In the summer of 2014 United introduced Uber-integration for its mobile app.

Now American Airlines has partnered with Uber as well, introduced with two promotions. The app-integration provides for:

• Integration with the American mobile app.
  
• Ride reminders.

Like the Hilton and IHG partnerships, the app will remind you to use Uber when you’ve told it in advance you’re going to need to do so. Of course the whole idea of Uber is on-demand, you don’t even need to schedule it. And when you need Uber do you really need a reminder? You just hit a button. And instead of opening the Uber app, you can open the American Airlines app (which I only do prior to flight, not on arrival, so it’s not even saving the step of opening an app).

There’s also in-app airport navigation assistance to find the Uber pickup spot. There are some airports where it’s totally easy to figure out how to reach your Uber driver. The Uber app will come up and ask you for your door number (or letter) and communicate that to the driver. Otherwise you can text or call your driver through the app. I don’t find it confusing at all (though in foreign countries, if I want to use data and not voice, I sort of wish the Uber app provided for in-app internet-based texting.)

Still, I suppose there’s value add in providing location assistance. The American-Uber partnership does that… but only for a limited number of airports.

Via American, here’s how it works:

There are two worthwhile promotions as part of this new partnership, however. Although both are limited-time.

1. Free ride for Executive Platinums. Executive Platinum members “who hold that status as of March 1, 2016” (in other words, not folks who had the status in 2015 but did not requalify) will receive single use code worth up to $25 in March. This will be valid for existing Uber users.

2. Triple miles on Uber. Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator cardholders will earn 2 extra miles per dollar on Uber through July 31. The full bonus will post after the promotion ends. (Cardmembers with the product that earns only half a mile per dollar will earn 2.5 miles per dollar through this promotion, while all others will earn 3 miles per dollar.) This applies only to the Barclaycard AAdvantage co-brand cards, not to Citibank co-brand cards.

In the hotel space Starwood, Hilton, and IHG all have Uber partnerships. But only Starwood’s is actually good.

• All members earn at least 1 Starpoint per dollar spent on Uber.
  
• If you’re staying with Starwood when you Uber you’ll earn based on your program tier: 2 points for general members, 3 for Golds and Platinums, 4 for 75 night Platinums and above.

Unlike some of the other partnerships, this one benefits all Starwood members and not just elites (although only after your first Starwood stay for the year).

And since this is based on linking accounts, and independent of payment method, this points-earning will be stackable with credit card earning (including category bonuses). That means a 75 night Platinum, staying at a Starwood property, could earn 4 Starpoints and three American Airlines miles per dollar with a Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator product.

You can leverage the American partnership and the Starwood partnership together in this way.

Hopefully we’ll see more promotions out of American and Uber in the future that add value to customers.
